To compare the incidence of placental abruption (PA), fetal death and the profile of maternal factors associated with fetal death in pregnancies affected by placental abruption during two different time periods in the same hospital. ⋯ Placental abruption continues to be a serious obstetric problem, with fatal consequences, especially when the placental abruption area is large. Maternal clinical symptoms are more severe in cases of fetal death.

This study aimed to analyze, from the perspective of Bioethics, the characteristics of the ethical professional processes of physicians sentenced to have their license revoked in the State of São Paulo. ⋯ Under the perspective of Bioethics, revocation of the medical license is necessary for the protection of patients. The patients' vulnerability was the ethical reference of the Board. Teaching and education of Bioethics must necessarily be an important part of medical graduation and post-graduation, however Bioethics must be disseminated (and put into practice) in all segments of society for the purpose of preserving human dignity.

C peptide measurement can be helpful for classification of diabetes mellitus (DM). The aim of this study was to investigate the association between clinical diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and levels of random C peptide. ⋯ Most patients with DM clinically classified as T1D exhibit low C peptide. However, pancreatic insulin secretion seems to be preserved in a significant proportion of those individuals, possibly representing an atypical form of DM, not yet elucidated, that combines characteristics of both T1D and T2D.

[Synergistic effect between dexmedetomidine and 0.75% ropivacaine in epidural anesthesia].
This study aimed to evaluate clinical characteristics of epidural anesthesia performed with 0.75% ropivacaine associated with dexmedetomidine. ⋯ There is clear synergism between epidural dexmedetomidine and ropivacaine, further this drug association does not bring about additional morbidity.

This prospective non-interventional study intended to assess the prognostic value of gastric intramucosal acidosis in patients with severe trauma admitted to a medical/surgical ICU. ⋯ Bicarbonate, base deficit, lactate, gastric intramucosal pH and PCO2 gradient discriminate survivors from nonsurvivors of major trauma. A critical air PCO2 gradient carried the greatest relative risk for death at 24 hours of ICU. Inadequate regional blood flow as detected by a critical PCO2 gradient seems to contribute to morbidity and mortality of severe trauma patients.
