Letter Review Case Reports
[Pontine myelinolysis after a hypoglycemic episode].
A case of central pontine myelinolysis following hypoglycemia is reported. The case was a 26- year-old female. ⋯ After the episode she developed a vegetative state. A magnetic resonance scan showed features consistent with the presence of central pontine myelinolysis.

The objective of this study was to determine the risk factors associated to bronchiolitis in infants less than two years of age. ⋯ Factors that increase the risk of bronchiolitis are a history of prematurity, and family history of bronchial asthma. Factors that have a protective effect are early weaning, and present-day breast-feeding.

It is know that a protein from Giardia intestinalis works as a substrate for V. cholerae and Escherichia coli. The toxic activity of both activates protein G form intestinal mucosa with a pathogenic activity results. In the present study, the pathogenic activity of subunit A of Vibrio cholerae toxin (ADP-ribosyltranferase) using isolated fragments from: Giardia intestinalis and a synthetic peptide were used as modulators in vivo. ⋯ The ADP ribosyltranferase activity of heat labile Escherichia coli and Vibrio cholerae toxins were modified by in vitro and in vivo interaction with ARF protein, which modified pathogenic effect over rabbits intestinal epithelium.

Homocysteine is a thiol-containing amino acid derived from methionine metabolism that can be degraded through two enzymatic pathways: remethylation and trans-sulfuration. In remethylation, homocysteine regenerates methionine. In the trans-sulfuration pathway, homocysteine forms cysteine. ⋯ The present review describes the homocysteine metabolism, the epidemiological evidence showing the association between homocysteine and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. The mechanisms by which homocysteine produces vascular damage are indicated. Finally, some recommendations are given for the nutritional therapy of patients with hyperhomocysteinemia.

Rat hind-foot carrageenan induced edema (CIE) is a widely used model to evaluate anti-inflammatory drugs. It shows two well-defined phases, however a third not fully characterized phase has been observed. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a free radical-scavenger with anti-inflammatory activity. In our country there is not a specifically designed instrument to evaluate edema in CIE. ⋯ The anti-inflammatory activity of SOD and Naproxen is extended until the very late phase in the CIE model. In this bioassay, this long lasting activity of the enzyme should be ascribed to a mechanism supplementary to its free radical-scavenger property. SOD may be indeed an alternative treatment in inflammatory diseases.
