The objective was to determine if ethnicity was a prognostic variable in survival outcomes for testicular seminoma. ⋯ In this population with testicular seminoma Mexican-American patients appear to have a worse prognosis than other ethnic groups. These differences were associated to a delayed diagnosis probably due to cultural influences.

[Busulfan versus busulfan-interferon as maintenance therapy in chronic myeloid leukemia].
We studied 30 patients in order to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and toxicity of alfa interferon associated with busulfan as maintenance treatment in de novo chronic granulocytic leukemia. Patients received 0.2 mg/kg of busulfan and reached complete hematological remission (CHR). ⋯ The duration of CHR was longer in the alfa-interferon group: 31 vs 16 months (p = 0.03) but no cytogenetic remissions were observed. Alfa interferon was well tolerated: no patient was excluded from the study due to toxicity.

[Diagnostic yield of various urine tests in urinary tract infections].
1. To determine the value of pyuria and bacteriuria by high-power field (hpf) in centrifuged urine and of tests with reactive strips for determining leukocyte estearase activity and nitrites in the diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI). 2. To establish the ideal cut-off point for these tests. ⋯ The diagnostic performance of leukocyte estearase by reactive strips was similar to the microscopy of leukocytes and bacteria but the nitrite test had a lower performance. The combination of the leukocytes and bacteriuria measured by hpf appears to be very useful in the diagnosis of UTI.

The genomic DNAs of carrier mothers from 20 hemophilia A unrelated Mexican families were analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the Bcl I polymorphic region at intron 18 of the factor VIII gene. Eleven women (55%) were found to be informative (Bcl I+/Bcl I-), eight (40%) were Bcl I- homozygotes and one (5%) was a Bcl I+ homozygote. In 18 daughters of the informative families we were able to establish carrier status for eight. The frequency of the Bcl I alleles in the 20 mothers was 0.675 for Bcl I- and 0.325 for Bcl I+ which give a frequency of 44% of heterozygous females in our sample.

[Physico-chemical properties related to gastrointestinal function of 6 sources of dietary fiber].
The physicochemical properties of the six sources of dietary fiber more commonly consumed in Mexico were studied. The knowledge of these properties may allow a prediction of the functional effect of the fibers on the GI tract. ⋯ PP and GM showed a higher water holding capacity and viscosity and a lower ion exchange capacity: we anticipate that these fibers would be more effective to regulate plasma levels of glucose and cholesterol in contrast, WB and SI with a lower water holding capacity and viscosity and a higher proportion of insoluble fiber would be more effective to increase fecal bulk. Fibers from DC and from cactus fiber isolate were intermediate in these responses.
