Review Case Reports
[Vibrio vulnificus in Mexico: a case report and review of the literature].
Vibrio vulnificus is an etiologic agent of septicemia and skin lesions. Patients with chronic diseases, and more frequently chronic liver disease, are specially susceptible to this infection. ⋯ The patient had ingested shrimps two days before. A review of the recent literature on the subject is also presented.

Comparative Study
[Elevation of total urinary catecholamines in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage].
We designed a prospective study in order to evaluate total urinary catecholamines in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and correlate them with some prognostic factors and its complications. We studied 24 patients: 19 were normotensive, five had had a previous arterial hypertension that persisted during the SAH, and five developed the hypertension during the SAH. The latter showed cardiac complications with a more severely affected Hunt and Hess scale and a higher level of excretion of urinary catecholamines than the normotensive patients (p < 0.003). The cases with previous arterial hypertension that persisted during the SAH had more complications than the normotensive patients but in a lesser degree compared to chose who developed the hypertension during the SAH.

Traditionally, the renin angiotensin system (RAS) has been thought of primarily as an endocrine system that delivers circulating angiotensin II to target tissues. This peptide is a potent vasoconstrictor and a primary stimulus for aldosterone secretion. In addition, angiotensin II has many other targets such as kidney, heart and brain, from which it elicits different specific responses. ⋯ It has been proposed that the main function of the circulating RAS is to provide short-term cardiorenal homeostasis. The tonic control (e.g., adrenal and kidney) is influenced by the intrinsic tissue RAS. This new concept provides a broader outlook on the RAS and challenges its traditional endocrine role.
