To identify the predictors of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and to determine the relationship between usage of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and the occurrence of a first non-fatal ACS event among patients that attended governmental hospitals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. ⋯ There was no association between PPIs and the occurrence of a first non-fatal ACS event. Smoking, increased weight, and dyslipidemia are considered predictors of ACS. Furthermore, ACS is associated with self-reported diabetes, hypertension, and physical activity.

To assess the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of children from a community in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, excluding those with known chronic illnesses. Methods: Four schools in Jeddah participated in this cross-sectional study, which was conducted from February 2018 to February 2019. The parents of 5-14 year-old children were surveyed using the validated Arabic version of the Child Health Questionnaire-Parent Form 50 (CHQ-PF50). It consisted of 50 items divided into 15 scales (namely, 11 multi-item and 4 single-item scales) and expressed as scores of 0-100, with higher scores indicating better HRQOL. ⋯ However, relatively low scores were observed for general health perception (70.01), behavior (73.70), and mental health (75.65). Boys scored lower in behavior (difference of means = -5.80), global behavior (-4.47), mental health (-4.81), general health perception (-2.59), parental impact-emotional (-5.11), family activities (-1.77), and family cohesion (-2.19). Furthermore, adolescent boys scored lower in global health, mental health, global behavior, and parental impact. Conclusion: This study showed globally adequate levels of HRQOL among Saudi children, with some limitations in behavior and mental health, especially in boys and adolescents.

Acute necrotizing pancreatitis represents a severe form of acute pancreatitis, characterized by pancreatic collections and necrosis of the pancreas and surrounding tissues. It is associated with higher rates of morbidity and mortality. Scrotal swelling is a rare complication of acute necrotizing pancreatitis due to the extension of pancreatic necrotic masses involving the inguinal canal and scrotum. We report a case of scrotal swelling as the first sign of unrecognized severe necrotizing pancreatitis with a fatal outcome.

To investigate the drug resistance of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli ) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) in children with urinary tract infection (UTI) and to provide the rationale for clinical use of antibiotics. ⋯ In southern China, the proportion of ESBL-producing strains and the drug resistance rates of E. coli and K. pneumoniae in UTI in children was high, but their resistance rates to carbapenems and β-lactamase inhibitor complexes containing tazobactam were low. Carbapenems are the most effective antibacterial drugs for the treatment of ESBL-producing bacteria.

To identify risk factors associated with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infections among hospitalized children at King Fahad Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. ⋯ This study identified prior antibiotic exposure, recent surgery and the use of invasive procedures as significant risk factors for colonization or infection with CRE. Also, the need for public awareness, continuing education for healthcare professionals, optimum use of invasive devices, enhanced surveillance, and antimicrobial stewardship are highlighted here which can limit CRE transmission in healthcare facilities.
