To examine the epidemiology of hand fractures including common bones affected, causes, interventions, outcomes, and complications. Methods: This retrospective records-based study included patients who were admitted to King Saud Medical City, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with traumatic metacarpal or phalangeal fractures between January 2016 and September 2017. Carpal fractures, wrist fractures, and all pathological fractures were excluded. Results: A total of 82 patients (90.2% of them men with an average age of 27.6±13.4 years) with 101 fractures were included. The fifth (25.5%) and first (24.5%) rays were the most commonly affected ones. ⋯ The most frequent causes of hand fractures included falls (40.5%), road traffic accidents (20.3%), crushing injuries (9.5%), and machinery injuries (9.5%). Approximately 90.1% of the patients underwent operative interventions including open reduction (50.5%) and closed reduction (34.3%). The majority of fractures (79.2%) healed, and only 14.7% of fractures developed complications. Conclusion: In this study of hand fractures, patients were predominantly males and the main causes of fractures were falls and road traffic accidents.

To investigate the use of leukocyte-platelet rich fibrin on suppressing the porphyromonas gingivalis (PG-LPS)-induced secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. Methods:This quantitative experimental study was conducted at the School and Hospital of Stomatology, Jilin University, Changchun, China, between September 2017 and January 2019. A modified technique was used to obtain human gingival fibroblast cells (HGFCs). 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and Cell Counting Kit-8 tests were established to determine the proliferation rate. Human gingival fibroblast cells were treated by PG-LPS at different periods and the isolated mRNA was subjected to reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. ⋯ The expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines messenger ribnucleic acid was notably raised at 3 and 6 hours post-PG-LPS treatment. The cumulative release of growth factors peaked during the first 24 hours and the production continued for 10 days. However, the fibroblast expression of cytokines was significantly suppressed after treatment with leucocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF). Conclusion: This study provided a novel way of obtaining HGFCs and greater understanding of the clinical impacts through the assessment of the anti-inflammatory properties of L-PRF in vitro.

To determine human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, cervical cancer, and vaccine awareness among the Saudi population. ⋯ There is a lack of knowledge and misinformation regarding cervical cancer, Pap smears, HPV, and HPV association with cervical cancer. These data can be used as a basis to formulate effective population awareness programs.

To explores cultural differences between generations of faculty and students in undergraduate medical education and to develop an educational framework for stakeholders involvement. ⋯ This study explains both the cultural gap between Saudi and Western medical students as well as between Saudi generations, demonstrating the need for customized curricular revisions.
