Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and C (CHC) are one of the leading causes of cirrhosis and liver cancer with over a million of people dying annually from their consequences. In Russia CHB and CHC morbidity and related mortality show an upward trend. As a result of recent breakthroughs in antiviral therapeutics CHC became a curable disease. ⋯ However, complete elimination of the virus is possible only using technologies of genome editing, capable of specific cccDNA degradation. Nuclease systems are currently at their early stages of development, and there is a long way to prove their efficacy and safety. Nevertheless, highly promising results of the recent years leave no doubt that CRISPR/Cas systems and similar technologies can become the basis of CHB therapy.

The article highlights the role of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) in the primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death. It considers the results of multicenter studies comparing the efficacy of antiarrhythmic drugs and implantable devices in the primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death, including that in patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy and discusses quality of life in patients with ICDs.

Hypertensive urgency (HU) is a common reason particularly for elderly patients to seek medical advice. Severe asymptomatic hypertension and situational high blood pressure (BP) in patients with its high variability is frequently taken as HU. ⋯ Among the major groups of antihypertensive drugs, there are calcium antagonists, mainly amlodipine, which has the greatest potential to reduce BP variability. Thus, calcium antagonists can be considered as first-line drugs for patients with high BP variability.
