Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is1397645907a multifactorial disease, determined by environmental and genetic factors. Currently, the transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) gene shows the strongest association with T2D. In this study, we investigated whether TCF7L2 gene polymorphisms are associated with T2D in a Turkish population. ⋯ Our results indicate that, in the Turkish population, the T allele of the rs7903146 (C → T) and rs12255372 (G → T) polymorphisms in the TCF7L2 gene is an independent risk factor for the development of T2D.

We investigated the short- and medium-term effectiveness of genicular nerve radiofrequency (RF) applied in patients with chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis. ⋯ RF neurotomy of genicular nerves led to significant pain reduction and functional improvement in a subset of elderly patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis pain, and thus may be an effective treatment in such cases.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the serum concentration of main chemokines and interferons in patients with diagnosed endometriosis. ⋯ A total of 160 women were divided in two study groups (group 1 - endometriosis; group 2 - healthy women). Serum levels of IFN-α, IFN-γ, MCP-1, MIP-1α, MIP-1β, RANTES, eotaxin, IL-8, MIG, IP-10, and IL-17A were measured with Human Multiplex Cytokine Panels. Results. Serum levels of IFN-γ, MCP-1, and IL-8 were significantly higher (mean 14.03, 57.24, and 534.24, respectively, compared to 0.58, 20.51, and 259.82, respectively), and serum levels of IP-10 and eotaxin were significantly lower in women with endometriosis compared to the controls (mean 1.15 and 1.01, respectively, compared to 3.90 and 3.22, respectively). Conclusions. According to our results women with endometriosis have elevated levels IFN-γ, MCP-1, and IL-8, and lower serum levels of IP-10 and eotaxin, indicating unbalanced immune activity in endometriosis.

The aim of the present study was to examine the anticancer effects of combination treatment with artemisinin and iron on the human gastric cancer cell line. ⋯ Pathologic studies showed that the cytotoxic effects of artemisinin were dose dependent and the presence of iron enhanced the artemisinin's anticancer potency.

Autism is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder. This study aimed to assess the clinical significance of amino acid profile assay in autism using cation-exchange chromatography with ninhydrin postcolumn derivatization. ⋯ The study revealed that autistic children exhibit distinct alterations in the plasma levels of some amino acids, which can in turn participate in the disease etiology and can be applied as a diagnostic tool for early detection of autism.
