Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) inhibitors, a class of oral antidiabetic drugs, have been shown to be protective on the vascular system because of their antiinflammatory, antiatherosclerotic, and vasodilatory effects. ß2-adrenoceptors (ß2-ARs) mediate the vasorelaxation in the aorta. However, ß3-adrenoceptor-mediated relaxation has not been studied in diabetic aorta yet. Thus, we aimed to study the effect of sitagliptin treatment on ß2- and ß3-adrenoceptor-mediated relaxations in the diabetic rat aorta. ⋯ Our results indicate that sitagliptin treatment does not alter ß-AR-mediated relaxation in streptozotocin-diabetic rat aorta; however, it significantly stimulates the eNOS pathway. Future studies are needed to clarify the relationship between the eNOS pathway and DPP-4 inhibition.

Iodine is the basic substrate for thyroid hormone synthesis and is vital for the general population and especially pregnant women. Iodine deficiency may cause severe health problems for a foetus. This study aimed to determine the relationship, if any, between iodine level and thyroid function tests, and to determine the relationship between consumption of salt types and its effects on thyroid function tests in the first trimester of pregnancy. ⋯ Although large-scale salt iodination began long time ago, iodine deficiency is still a serious health problem among pregnant women. According to this study, use of rock salt is associated with low urinary iodine concentration in pregnant women and TSH values within the reference limits are not a good indicator for determining the iodine level.

The aim of this study was to summarize the experiences of a single medical center for genetic diagnosis and treatment of prenatal patients. ⋯ Clinical procedures such as ultrasounds and genetic tests are able to provide a better clinical follow-up for pregnant women about the possible congenital anomalies or any genetic condition, with proper genetic counseling and testing methodology.

Gemcitabine, dexamethasone and cisplatin (GDP) is a well-established salvage regimen for relapsed and refractory lymphomas. In this study, we aimed to share our experience with the patients who received GDP/R-GDP (rituximab-gemcitabine, dexamethasone and cisplatin) for stem cell mobilization. ⋯ We suggest that GDP/R-GDP plus G-CSF can be used as an effective chemotherapy regimen for mobilizing CD34+ stem cells from peripheral blood in relapsed and refractory lymphoma patients due to low toxicity, effective tumor reduction, and successful stem cell mobilization. It can also be assumed that the GDP mobilization regimen may be more effective, especially in patients with early-stage disease and in HL patients.

In the present study we aimed to figure out the effect of metformin on the expression of AMPK-alpha, cyclin D1, and Tp53, and apoptosis in primary breast cancer cells (PBCCs). ⋯ Metformin can modulate cyclin D1 and p53 expression through AMPK-alpha-independent mechanism in breast cancer cells, leading to cell proliferation inhibition and apoptosis induction.
