The effects of systemic magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) on retina in preterm hypoxic-ischemic (HI) rat model are not known. Our aim was to investigate the effects of MgSO4 on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) count, retinal ganglion cell (RGC) apoptotic index, retinal vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) expressions in preterm HI rat model. ⋯ Magnesium sulfate preconditioning and treatment in preterm HI rat model might diminish apoptosis, relatively preserve RGCs, and reduce retinal VEGFR-2 and GFAP expressions.

Calcineurin, an inhibitor of calcium dependent phosphatase is highly presented in a brain of an Alzheimer’s disease. Aging brain gets more sensitive to hyperactivation of calcineurin, and this event causes tau neurofibrillary plaque accumulation, which is one of the outcomes of this disease. The regions of hippocampus are much effected from the results of this process. Our hypothesis is that a calcineurin inhibitor, tacrolimus, could prevent the accumulation and the decrease of the neuronal cells. Therefore, this immunosuppressive drug could be a candidate for an early treatment of Alzheimer disease. ⋯ There was none preventive effect for neuronal loss in the hippocampus under the effect of tacrolimus drug according to stereological results. However, tacrolimus administration may have reduced cellular stress and cell damage.

We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of fulvestrant and affecting clinical factors, including the optimal sequencing of fulvestrant and chemotherapy in a real-life cohort. ⋯ In our experience, fulvestrant treatment was associated with comparable OS to clinical trials in a large cohort of patients. Patients treated with fulvestrant before chemotherapy were garnered significantly more benefit.

The aim of this study is to determine the mutation spectrums and clinical characteristics of NF1 patients followed up in our center and to investigate whether there is a genotype-phenotype relationship. ⋯ Fifty-three different mutations were found as a result of the NF1 gene analysis studied from patients and their family members. Among these 53 mutations, stop codon mutation was the most frequently detected mutations. Sixteen out of 50 (32%) mutations were found to be novel mutations. Twenty-eight tumors developed in our patients. Twenty of them were optic gliomas and others were medullary thyroid carcinoma, glioblastome multiforme, pons glioma, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, pilocytic astrositoma, hypothalamic glioma, cerebral hamartoma and cardiac fibroma. No genotype-phenotype relationship was detected in patients Conclusion: Comprehensive mutation analysis of NF1 will increase our knowledge due to its different phenotypic characteristics even in the same mutation.

Effective therapeutic approaches for SARS-CoV-2 pandemic are urgently needed. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) alone or in combination with azithromycin has been used in several countries, without any clear evidence. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness and safety of hydroxychloroquine as compared to hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin combination in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. ⋯ The present findings suggest that adding azithromycin to HCQ is not associated with any improvement in clinical outcome and mortality in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and supports the current knowledge not to include azithromycin in the initial treatment of COVID-19.
