Candida infections are gaining more attention for the last few decades so diagnostic tools are very important for early diagnosis. Conventional identification of yeasts is time-consuming, molecular methods are more complicated and relatively expensive gold-standard methods. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was put into the market due to its speed and high accuracy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of corn meal tween-80 agar (CMTA), CHROMagar Candida medium, and MALDI-TOF MS and to compare the obtained results with DNA sequencing. ⋯ MALDI-TOF MS is found to be the most accurate identification tool for clinically important Candida strains. CMTA alone should not be used for the final identification of Candida species and the chromogenic medium should always be considered presumptive.

The efficacy of anakinra compared to standard care of treatment for COVID-19: a meta-analysis.
As SARS-CoV-2 continues to spread worldwide, this study brings to light the link that anakinra, a recombinant IL-1 receptor antagonist, has in averting grave clinical outcomes. The objectives of this meta-analysis are to investigate the effects of anakinra in interventional groups compared to control/standard of care groups on mortality along with the provision of a prevalence estimate of the variables associated with death (C-reactive protein-CRP, ferritin, acute respiratory distress syndrome-ARDS). ⋯ Patients with COVID-19 pneumonia may be treated with anakinra as a safe and viable treatment modality to defer adverse outcomes such as a death in the 28-day period. Despite an auspicious premise, our findings must be used with caution as adequately powered randomized, placebo-controlled trials are required to corroborate these findings.

The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the predictive values of the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and Creatinine Index (CI) in the short-term mortality of maintenance hemodialysis patients and to determine their best cut-offs. ⋯ In hemodialysis patients, GNRI and CI have similar powers in predicting all-cause short-term mortality. The association of CI with all-cause death depends on gender. On the other hand, sex-specific CI predicts CV mortality better than GNRI.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a condition that may cause multiple organ dysfunction and has a high rate of mortality and morbidity. Therapeutic hypothermia is the only proven treatment that decreases the sequel and mortality rate of neonates that are born after 36 weeks of pregnancy and have moderate-severe HIE. ⋯ This study demonstrated that the depth of acidosis in the blood gas, multiple organ dysfunction, and the existence of early-onset seizures are the signs of poor prognosis. Therefore, physicians need to be aware of such prognostic factors to follow these patients more closely in terms of possible complications and to inform their parents.

Convalescent plasma (CP) might be an additional treatment modality in COVID-19. The aim of this study was to compare CP-related clinical characteristics and perinatal outcomes in pregnant women with mild or moderate-severe COVID-19. ⋯ Although data on the results of CP treatment in pregnant women are somewhat limited, it has been suggested that early CP treatment may be associated with improvements in laboratory and ventilatory parameters in pregnant women with mild and moderate-severe COVID-19. Nevertheless, there is a need for further, randomized controlled studies on this subject with the inclusion of greater numbers of patients.
