Deficient levels of vitamin D are an important factor in the pathogenesis of some neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and depression status and sleep disorders of patients on dialysis. ⋯ Our results suggest that deficiency of 25(OH)D is an important independent risk factor for poor sleep quality in hemodialysis patients.

Pregnant women and infants are at risk of severe lower respiratory tract infections induced by influenza or pertussis. The uptake of both vaccines is poor in spite of proven benefits and safety. We aimed to determine the knowledge and attitude of pregnant women and their primary healthcare providers towards immunization during pregnancy. ⋯ Most of the participants either pregnant women or healthcare workers were not vaccinated against pertussis and influenza. Dissemination of maternal immunization must be supported by the team work of healthcare professionals, authorities, universities, professional associations, stake holders, media and patients with current, evidence based knowledge.

The aim of this study is to investigate clinicopathologic features of familial papillary thyroid carcinoma (fPTC) and compare them with sporadic papillary thyroid carcinoma (sPTC) in Turkish patients. A retrospective analysis of the papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) cases, with or without family history with a follow-up around 10 years was performed. ⋯ The results of this study confirms a more aggressive nature in fPTC patients, in terms of bilaterality, multifocality, ETE, LNM, and distant metastasis, compared to sPTC patients in Turkish population.

Acute hyperglycemia is generally a frequently encountered condition in the emergency department (ED), because it is seen as a complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). In this study, we aimed to detect the change in adiponectin levels during acute hyperglycemic states and after normalization of blood glucose with insulin treatment. ⋯ Normalization of blood glucose in patients with hyperglycemia caused a decrease in adiponectin levels, independent of diabetes type and/or body weight in an acute emergency setting. Inhibited upregulation of adiponectin secretion and/or blunted suppressive effect of insulin due to hyperglycemia or exogenous insulin administration may have caused the decrease in adiponectin levels.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma are the most common allergic disorders worldwide. Aeroallergens are critical causative factors in the pathogenesis of these disorders and sensitization to aeroallergens differs in various countries and regions. Identification of the most common aeroallergen sensitization is crucial in the diagnosis and management of AR and asthma. We examined the distribution of aeroallergen sensitizations detected by skin prick tests (SPTs) in adult patients with AR and/or asthma in the city of Bursa. ⋯ Our study revealed that house dust mite was the most common sensitizing aeroallergen in patients with AR and asthma while pollens were the most common allergen in patients with only AR. The sensitization to grass and olive pollen was higher in cases of mild asthma than moderate and severe. Regional allergy panels may provide important clinical clues for characteristics and courses of allergic diseases.
