The serum fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP-4) level increases in chronic inflammatory diseases. The present study aimed to examine serum FABP-4 and interleukin (IL)-6 levels in patients with stable and acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the correlation of these markers with airflow limitation. ⋯ The study revealed that serum FABP-4 level was elevated with increasing GOLD grades in COPD patients, markedly in acute exacerbation phase. The increase was associated with elevated serum levels of IL-6 and severity of hypoxia. Thus, it seems that FABP-4 may be involved in the pathogenesis of COPD.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of trans-abdominal ultrasonography (USG), a noninvasive diagnostic tool, in predicting the presence of intraabdominal adhesions, especially near the trocar entry area, to provide safe surgical access to the abdomen. ⋯ Preoperative ultrasound examination of the abdominal wall may enhance the safety of abdominal entry during laparoscopic operations.

Hypertension is an important risk factor for cognitive impairment. This study explored whether elderly patients with stage I hypertension (HPs) and normotensive patients (NPs) showed differences in the recovery of postoperative attention network function according to the attentional network test (ANT) performance. ⋯ HPs showed selective cognitive impairment at different time points following elective hip or knee arthroplasty. Compared with NPs, during the first postoperative week, HPs were more likely to experience delayed recovery of alerting and executive control network function, but not orienting network function.
