In the United States of America (USA), sickle cell disease (SCD) occurs in 1:375 African-American births. However, published data from the Caribbean have revealed higher numbers for some Caribbean islands. St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) is a multi-island nation in the Caribbean, and there are currently no data on the incidence or prevalence of the disease in this population. The objective of this study was to obtain birth prevalence estimates for SCD in SVG. ⋯ The birth prevalence of SCD in SVG was higher than those in the USA, but was similar to the numbers in other Caribbean populations.

Jamaica, along with the Americas, experienced major epidemics of arboviral diseases transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito in recent years. These include dengue fever in 2012, Chikungunya fever in 2014 and Zika virus infection (ZIKV) in 2016. We present the emergence of the ZIKV epidemic in Jamaica and outline the national response. ⋯ The possibility exists for endemicity of ZIKV similar to dengue and chikungunya in Jamaica. A ZIKV vaccine, similar to the dengue and chikungunya vaccines, is needed to be fast-tracked into clinical trials to mitigate the effects of this disease.

Thyroid disorders are highly prevalent in patients with schizophrenia. Changes in the levels of thyroid hormones cause the occurrence of psychiatric disorders and affect the response to treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in thyroid hormone levels in patients with chronic schizophrenia, and to demonstrate any association between psychiatric symptoms and hormones. ⋯ These findings suggest that the subclinical hypothyroidism observed in the chronic schizophrenic patients may be associated with the treatment of neuroleptics. The possible alterations of thyroid hormones should be considered in chronic schizophrenic patients for treatment with neuroleptics.

Appendicitis, the most common cause of abdominal pain requiring surgery in children, refers to inflammation of the vermiform appendix. The aetiology of appendicitis is multifactorial, although it is affected by several precursor factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether allergic diseases cause a predisposition to appendicitis. ⋯ While there are several known factors implicated in the causation of acute appendicitis, the cause cannot be identified in some cases. We think that atopy may also be a risk factor in the development of acute appendicitis.
