The prevalence of end-stage renal disease in Taiwan is the highest in the world; haemodialysis accounts for about 7% of the expenditure of the National Health Insurance. Nursing home residents with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have not been identified yet in Taiwan, along with associated risk factors. The objective of this study is to investigate the risk factors of CKD in long-term care facilities in Taiwan and those significantly associated with the presence of CKD. ⋯ Most of the nursing home elderly with advanced CKD have poor control of associated risk factors, including obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and hyperglycaemia. For them, metabolic syndrome may be a major contributant to the aetiology. Monitoring their BMI and waist circumference is a simple but effective way to suspect the presence of CKD.

The numerical simulation model of blood flow in bend is studied in this paper. The curvature modification is conducted for the blood flow model in bend to obtain the modified blood flow model in bend. The modified model is verified by U tube. By comparing the simulation results with the experimental results obtained by measuring the flow data in U tube, it was found that the modified blood flow model in bend can effectively improve the prediction accuracy of blood flow data affected by the curvature effect.

Diabetes mellitus is an important human disease afflicting many from various walks of life in different countries. Even though modern medicines contribute a variety of effective treatment options, they can have several unfavourable effects. The intention of this review is to organize and discuss various studies that have been previously conducted on the effectiveness of these herbal plants in diabetes. ⋯ This review focusses on some medicinal plants that have antidiabetic effect, thus contributing to the reduction of risk factors associated with diabetes, and related beneficial effects are compiled.

This study aimed to evaluate the levels of the adipokines, resistin and adiponectin in normotensive and high normal blood pressure patients. ⋯ High normal blood pressure patients have increased levels of resistin and lower values of adiponectin when compared with age-matched non-diabetic normotensive subjects. This may explain why those patients showed more progression to hypertension, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk than normotensive subjects.

To determine current red cell transfusion practices, transfusion indications and their relationship to patient outcome in intensive care unit (ICU) patients at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). ⋯ The mean haemoglobin for transfusion at the ICU, UHWI, is 7.3 g/dL, just above the recommended trigger of 7.0 g/dL in a restrictive transfusion practice. Transfusion policies are needed to better allocate a scarce commodity and minimize complications associated with blood transfusion.
