Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Placebo-controlled study of levetiracetam in idiopathic generalized epilepsy.
To assess the efficacy and tolerability of adjunctive levetiracetam in patients with uncontrolled generalized tonic-clonic (GTC) seizures associated with idiopathic generalized epilepsies (IGE). ⋯ Adjunctive levetiracetam is an effective and well-tolerated antiepileptic drug for treating generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsies.

To reassess the value of neuroimaging of the emergency patient presenting with seizure as a screening procedure for providing information that will change acute management, and to reassess clinical and historical features associated with an abnormal neuroimaging study in these patients. ⋯ Immediate noncontrast CT is possibly useful for emergency patients presenting with seizure to guide appropriate acute management especially where there is an abnormal neurologic examination, predisposing history, or focal seizure onset.

To investigate the association between cigarette smoking, level of education, occupation, and the occurrence of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ⋯ Occupation, education, and cigarette smoking are risk factors for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, but only smoking appeared independently associated.

Comparative Study
Differences and similarities between atypical facial pain and trigeminal neuropathic pain.
To investigate contribution of neuropathic mechanisms to clinically diagnosed atypical facial pain (AFP) using neurophysiologic and thermal quantitative sensory testing (QST) and comparing findings in AFP with those in definite trigeminal neuropathic pain (TNP). ⋯ Clinical diagnosis of atypical facial pain represents a heterogeneous entity and seems to form a continuum regarding the level and extent of neuropathic involvement. Without detailed neurophysiologic and quantitative sensory examinations, neuropathic cause of chronic orofacial pain may be overlooked.
