A combination of factors has diluted the recruitment experience and created a confluence of elements similar to a perfect storm. Recruitment has morphed from a high-touch experience to a high-tech process. ⋯ The ideal recruitment scenario would be a marriage of high tech and high touch. We must drive the technology, not let the technology dictate our process.

Patient fall rates are perceived as the indicator that could be most improved through nurse-led safety strategies or interventions. A safety-driven design with a goal to prevent inpatient fall-related injuries should be a hospital design principle. ⋯ The findings from the nurse interviews were compared with the intervention strategies toward the five primary root causes of fatal falls as suggested by the Joint Commission (2005b). Twenty-four solutions were identified from the nurse interview transcriptions: five were related to the dimension of inadequate caregiver communication, none was associated with the dimension of inadequate staff orientation and training, three were related to inadequate assessment and reassessment, 15 were associated with unsafe care environment, and one was related to inadequate care planning and provision.

One of the 14 Forces of Magnetism requires a health care organization to have a professional model of care. The eligibility requirements stipulate that this model must be utilized throughout the health care system and that the same philosophy must be used throughout the system. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Synergy Model for Patient Care describes nursing practice based on eight patient characteristics, and also describes eight nurse competencies. ⋯ Synergy results when the needs and characteristics of a patient, clinical unit, or system are matched with a nurse's competencies. The synergy model is an excellent framework to organize the work of patient care throughout the health care system. It can be used and applied in various ways and provides a comprehensive framework for assuring success in building a philosophy that supports the Forces of Magnetism.

To create a health system that better meets patients' needs requires a fundamental redesign of our care delivery system and a new framework. Without a payment mechanism to reflect the value of care provided other than the face-to-face visit, adoption of advanced medical home principles will be challenging. ⋯ It becomes the responsibility of the multidisciplinary team of providers to ensure that patients being discharged have an identified personal physician or team who will provide a medical home, and that the handoff to this medical home is thorough and well coordinated. An ideal patient care experience is one in which all systems and processes are geared to meet the needs of the patient: a safety-oriented system that provides standardized, evidence-based care supported by technology, but that recognizes and responds to individual needs.

An important field in leadership research is that of the social identity of the group and what that means for leadership. In health care, there are many different types of social identities that vary by hospital, geography, and profession. ⋯ Identifying the social identity of the group is the first step. The most successful have expertise in assessing the social identity of groups and developing a commonality of a shared vision that represents the best work of the group and of the leader.
