With the shortfall of nurses, more health care organizations are actively recruiting new graduate nurses. To translate active recruitment to successful retention, however, these newest nurses need support to make the adjustment from the security of a protected academic environment to the demands of a professional nursing career. ⋯ A unique model implemented in 2003 transformed new graduate nurses into confident staff nurses in an acute care setting. The insights gained and the investments required for a "magnetic" strategy to make new graduate nurses successful new staff nurses who stay with the organization are revealed.

Nursing unit volume-outcome relationships exist for patients assigned selected DRGs. This finding suggests that, in some cases, aggregating inpatients with similar clinical conditions may result in lower cost of care, shorter length of stay, and fewer hospital deaths.

This secondary analysis uses Goffman's stage drama to explore the roles of registered nurses in videotaped reports in a hospital. Each report was a performance by the charge nurse which affected the climate, interactions, and duration of the report.

Communication failure plays an important role in causing medical errors. Clinical communication is highly complex and prone to error especially during transitions of patient care and emergent situations. Standardized approaches and tools may provide potential solutions to improve the quality of communication and prevent subsequent patient harm. The National Patient Safety Foundation, through its Stand Up for Patient Safety Program, is committed to assisting organizations improve clinical communication.
