We aimed to compare the effect of dexmedetomidine with remifentanil on hemodynamic stability, surgical field quality, and surgeon satisfaction during rhinoplasty. ⋯ Dexmedetomidine was associated with relatively stable hemodynamics, leading to decreased intraoperative bleeding, recovery time, and greater surgeon satisfaction and the level of consciousness in the recovery ward. However, painlessness and patient satisfaction were greater with the use of remifentanil.

Development and validation of a risk nomogram for postoperative acute kidney injury in older patients undergoing liver resection: a pilot study.
Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Early identification of high-risk patients of developing postoperative AKI can optimize perioperative renal management and facilitate patient survival. The present study aims to develop and validate a nomogram to predict postoperative AKI after liver resection in older patients. ⋯ This nomogram and summary risk score accurately predicted postoperative AKI using six clinically accessible variables, with potential application in facilitating the optimized perioperative renal management in older patients undergoing liver resection.

Nomograms for predicting difficult airway based on ultrasound assessment.
Accurate prediction of the difficult airway (DA) could help to prevent catastrophic consequences in emergency resuscitation, intensive care, and general anesthesia. Until now, there is no nomogram prediction model for DA based on ultrasound assessment. In this study, we aimed to develop a predictive model for difficult tracheal intubation (DTI) and difficult laryngoscopy (DL) using nomogram based on ultrasound measurement. We hypothesized that nomogram could utilize multivariate data to predict DTI and DL. ⋯ Nomograms based on airway ultrasonography could be a reliable tool in predicting DA.

Delta-opioid receptor is widely expressed in human and rodent hearts, and has been proved to protect cardiomyocytes against ischemia/reperfusion and heart failure. The antagonist of delta-opioid receptor could block the rescue effect of lipid emulsion against local anesthetic cardiotoxicity. However, no evidence is available for the direct effect of delta-opioid-receptor agonists on the cardiotoxicity of local anesthetics. ⋯ Our data show that BW373U86 does not affect the cardiotoxicity of bupivacaine compared with NS control in rats. 30% LE pretreatment protects the myocardium against bupivacaine-induced cardiotoxicity.

Ultrasonographic assessment of preoperative gastric volume in patients with dyspepsia: a prospective observational study.
Patients undergoing gastroenteroscopy during sedation are prone to aspiration, and most patients with dyspepsia have delayed gastric emptying. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of measuring the gastric antrum cross-sectional area (CSA) to supply a novel clinical diagnostic reference value in patients with dyspepsia. ⋯ We used the cut-off value of the antral area for the fast diagnosis of gastric volumes in patients with dyspepsia, which may assist clinicians in identifying patients at risk of aspiration.
