Observational StudyReal life efficacy and safety of direct-acting antiviral therapy for treatment of patients infected with hepatitis C virus genotypes 1, 2 and 3 in northwest China.
Regimens involving direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) are recommended for the treatment of infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes 1, 2 and 3. But real-world data is still not enough, especially in Asia. ⋯ The DAA-based regimens tested in this study have excellent effectiveness and safety in all patients infected with HCV genotypes 1, 2 and 3, including those with cirrhosis.

Review Comparative StudyCurrent status of associating liver partition with portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy: Comparison with two-stage hepatectomy and strategies for better outcomes.
Since its introduction in 2012, associating liver partition with portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) has significantly expanded the pool of candidates for liver resection. It offers patients with insufficient liver function a chance of a cure. ALPPS is most controversial when its high morbidity and mortality is concerned. ⋯ In patients with challenging anatomy, partial ALPPS potentially reduces morbidity, but remnant hypertrophy may compare unfavorably to a complete split. When compared to conventional two-stage hepatectomy with portal vein embolization or portal vein ligation, ALPPS offers a higher resection rate for colorectal liver metastasis without increased morbidity or mortality. While ALPPS has obvious theoretical oncological advantages over two-stage hepatectomy, the long-term outcomes are yet to be determined.

Metabolic syndrome attenuates ulcerative colitis: Correlation with interleukin-10 and galectin-3 expression.
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation of intestinal epithelium, primarily of the colon. An increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with UC has been documented recently. Still, there is no evidence that MetS alters the course of the UC. ⋯ Local dominance of Gal-3 and IL-10 over pro-inflammatory mediators in patients with MetS may present a mechanism for limiting the inflammatory process and subsequent tissue damage in UC.

Knockdown of lncRNAXLOC_001659 inhibits proliferation and invasion of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells.
Studies have shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a key role in almost all key physiological and pathological processes, including different types of malignant tumors. Our previous lncRNA microarray results have shown that lncRNA XLOC_001659 is upregulated in esophageal cancer (EC) tissues, with a fold change of 20.9 relative to normal esophageal tissues. But its effect and the molecular biological mechanisms on proliferation and invasion of EC cells remain unclear. ⋯ Knockdown of lncRNA XLOC_001659 inhibits proliferation and invasion of ESCC cells via regulation of miR-490-5p/PIK3CA, suggesting that it may play a role in ESCC tumorigenesis and progression.

Observational StudyIncreased circulating circular RNA_103516 is a novel biomarker for inflammatory bowel disease in adult patients.
Increasing evidence demonstrates that by acting as microRNA sponges modulating gene expression at the transcriptional or post-transcriptional level, circular RNAs (circRNAs) participate in the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases and are considered ideal biomarkers of human disease. ⋯ CircRNA_103516 levels in PBMCs can be considered an ideal candidate biomarker for diagnosing IBD. Dysregulation of circRNA_103516 may participate in the molecular mechanism of IBD through hsa-miR-19b-1-5p sponging.
