Metabolic syndrome attenuates ulcerative colitis: Correlation with interleukin-10 and galectin-3 expression.
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation of intestinal epithelium, primarily of the colon. An increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with UC has been documented recently. Still, there is no evidence that MetS alters the course of the UC. ⋯ Local dominance of Gal-3 and IL-10 over pro-inflammatory mediators in patients with MetS may present a mechanism for limiting the inflammatory process and subsequent tissue damage in UC.

Knockdown of lncRNAXLOC_001659 inhibits proliferation and invasion of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells.
Studies have shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a key role in almost all key physiological and pathological processes, including different types of malignant tumors. Our previous lncRNA microarray results have shown that lncRNA XLOC_001659 is upregulated in esophageal cancer (EC) tissues, with a fold change of 20.9 relative to normal esophageal tissues. But its effect and the molecular biological mechanisms on proliferation and invasion of EC cells remain unclear. ⋯ Knockdown of lncRNA XLOC_001659 inhibits proliferation and invasion of ESCC cells via regulation of miR-490-5p/PIK3CA, suggesting that it may play a role in ESCC tumorigenesis and progression.

Observational StudyIncreased circulating circular RNA_103516 is a novel biomarker for inflammatory bowel disease in adult patients.
Increasing evidence demonstrates that by acting as microRNA sponges modulating gene expression at the transcriptional or post-transcriptional level, circular RNAs (circRNAs) participate in the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases and are considered ideal biomarkers of human disease. ⋯ CircRNA_103516 levels in PBMCs can be considered an ideal candidate biomarker for diagnosing IBD. Dysregulation of circRNA_103516 may participate in the molecular mechanism of IBD through hsa-miR-19b-1-5p sponging.

Sustained virologic response to direct-acting antiviral agents predicts better outcomes in hepatitis C virus-infected patients: A retrospective study.
Direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) are extremely effective in eradicating hepatitis C virus (HCV) in chronically infected patients. However, the protective role of the sustained virologic response (SVR) achieved by second- and third-generation DAAs against the onset of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and mortality is less well established. ⋯ DAA treatment is effective in inducing SVR and protecting against HCC or death. A residual risk of HCC persists in patients with advanced liver disease or with complications, such as mixed cryoglobulinemia or renal failure.

Meta Analysis Comparative StudyComplete or partial split in associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) has been adopted by liver surgeons in recent years. However, high morbidity and mortality rates have limited the promotion of this technique. Some recent studies have suggested that ALPPS with a partial split can effectively induce the growth of future liver remnant (FLR) similar to a complete split with better postoperative safety profiles. However, some others have suggested that ALPPS can induce more rapid and adequate FLR growth, but with the same postoperative morbidity and mortality rates as in partial split of the liver parenchyma in ALPPS (p-ALPPS). ⋯ The findings of our study suggest that p-ALPPS is safer than ALPPS in patients without cirrhosis and exhibits the same rate of FLR hypertrophy.
