[Optic nerve sheath diameter and eyeball transverse diameter as a useful tool for the clinical prognosis in patients with stroke during hospitalization].
To evaluate the prognostic value of ultrasonographic measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and ONSD/eyeball transverse diameter (ETD) ratio in stroke patients during hospitalization. ⋯ ONSD and ONSD/ETD were significantly correlated with the prognosis of critical patients with stroke. The mortality increased significantly in patients with an ONSD greater than 5.0 mm and ONSD/ETD greater than 0.25. ONSD and ONSD/ETD may be promising tools for early assessment of clinical outcomes in these patients.

[Effects of uncoupling protein 2 overexpression on myocardial mitochondrial dynamics in sepsis rats].
To investigate the effects of uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) overexpression on mitochondrial dynamics (mitochondrial division and fusion) of sepsis myocardial injury in rats. ⋯ UCP2 overexpression can significantly improve the systemic systolic function of myocardium in sepsis rats, protect myocardial mitochondrial ultrastructure, inhibit mitochondrial division, and improve mitochondrial ATP synthesis.

[Minimum quality threshold in preclinical sepsis studies (MQTiPSS): quality threshold for types of infections and organ dysfunction endpoints].
Although the clinical definitions of sepsis and recommended treatments are regularly updated, a systematic review has not been done for preclinical models. To address this deficit, a Wiggers-Bernard Conference on preclinical sepsis modeling reviewed the 260 most highly cited papers between 2003 and 2012 using sepsis models to create a series of recommendations. This Part II report provides recommendations for the types of infections and documentation of organ injury in preclinical sepsis models. ⋯ Recommendation #12: organ dysfunction should be measured in an objective manner using reproducible scoring systems. Recommendation #13: not all experiments must measure all parameters of organ dysfunction, but investigators should attempt to fully capture as much information as possible. These recommendations are proposed as "best practices" for animal models of sepsis.

[Clinical investigation on the risk factors for prognosis in patients with septic shock].
To study the risk factors of prognosis in patients with septic shock, and to provide a reliable evidence to evaluate severity. ⋯ Age, heart rate, qSOFA score, Myo, time from hospitalization to septic shock, duration of mechanical ventilation were independent risk factors for the prognosis of patients with septic shock. The 28-day mortality in patients with elevated blood Myo was significantly higher than that in those with normal blood Myo. The qSOFA score, time from hospitalization to septic shock and duration of mechanical ventilation were independent risk factors for the prognosis of septic shock patients with elevated blood Myo.

[Effects of circadian heart rate variation on short-term and long-term mortality in intensive care unit patients: a retrospective cohort study based on MIMIC-II database].
To investigate the effect of circadian heart rate variation on short-term and long-term mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. ⋯ In ICU patients, the 28-day mortality and 1-year mortality increase with the higher circadian heart rate variation, which indicates that the circadian heart rate variation in ICU patients is positively correlated with the short-term and long-term mortality, especially in patients with relatively severe illness.
