Vascular Responses to Post Occlusive Reactive Hyperemia and Systemic Inflammation in Overlap Syndrome of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
Post-occlusive reactive hyperemia (RH) is impaired in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The aim of the present study was to examine systemic vascular response and endothelial function in patients of Overlap Syndrome (OS) of COPD and OSA and also to investigate whether OS has any additional effect on endothelial dysfunction when compared to dysfunction caused by COPD alone. ⋯ The patients with Overlap Syndrome have systemic inflammation and impaired reactive hyperaemia response. However, no additive effect of OSA was observed on impaired RH in patients with co-existing COPD.

Comparative StudyA comparative study between different pain rating scales in patients of osteoarthritis.
Study was conducted to assess the sensitivity and simplicity of various pain rating scales in patients of osteoarthritis with chronic pain so that most appropriate scale can be identified. Scales included were Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale (WBS), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Faces Pain Scale- Revised (FPS-R), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Verbal Rating Scale (VRS). Patients were asked to indicate their pain on these scales and comment about the simplicity of scales. ⋯ Most simple, easy to answer scale (83%) was WBS followed by FPS-R (17%). We conclude that all the scales are sensitive for assessment of the chronic osteoarthritis pain and are not different from each others. The most simple and preferred pain rating scale is WBS for the regional population.

To estimate the prevalence of primary dysmenorrhoea among school girls and to compare the impact of exercise and hot water bottle on the occurrence and severity of primary dysmenorrhoea among the study population. ⋯ Both exercise & hot water bottle can be used in dysmenorrhoeic girls in home setting to provide relief from pain and menstrual distress.

Cardiovascular parasympathetic nervous system dysfunction in female rheumatoid arthritis patients.
The autonomic dysfunction has been reported in patients with (rheumatoid arthritis) RA and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) like connective tissue disorders and it may be due to the vasculitis of vasa nervorum and secondary amyloidosis. The pathogenesis may also have an immune component that affects autonomic functions. ⋯ In conclusion, this study has confirmed the presence of significant subclinical cardiovascular parasympathetic nervous dysfunction in RA patients and its positive association with female gender. Hence, inclusion of cardiovascular autonomic function tests in the routine clinical examination may be helpful in the early detection of autonomic dysfunction in RA.

Impedance cardiography for monitoring changes in cardiac output.
Impedance Cardiography (ICG) is a non invasive method useful for continuous monitoring of cardiac output but, it still has not found wide usage for measuring cardiac output in clinics and research. Most studies focused on comparing the cardiac output measured at rest with reference methods. In the present study we evaluated the validity of ICG against Doppler Echocardiography (DE) in measuring cardiac output changes that occur during static exercise. ⋯ The pooled means of cardiac output measured by ICG and DE do not differ significantly and bears a significant correlation (r = 0.812, P < 0.001). The bias (d +/- s) calculated is 0.15 +/- 0.64 L/min. ICG could provide valid information regarding the relative changes in cardiac output.
