Socioeconomic correlates and biochemical profiles of smokers in Poland: cross-sectional study.
Epidemiological studies have shown a fairly constant association between the socioeconomic status and smoking. However, associations between smoking and the biological indicators of health status have not been well described yet. ⋯ We found differences regarding socioeconomic characteristics and major biochemical parameters between smokers and nonsmokers in Poland. However, it is difficult to establish which associations are causal for cardiovascular risk owing to the cross‑sectional design of this study.

Worse long-term prognosis in myocardial infarction occurring at weekends or public holidays with insight into myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries.
The weekend effect in Polish patients with myocardial infarction (MI) treated in the current network of catheterization laboratories is poorly understood. ⋯ Patients hospitalized on NWDs as compared with those admitted on WDs had a larger ischemic territory and more often had transmural MI with incomplete epicardial reperfusion, which resulted in a higher long‑term mortality. The latter outcome was not influenced by MINOCA.

Alcohol use disorder increases the risk of non-fatal and fatal cardiovascular disease events: an 11-year observation of a Polish population-based cohort. The HAPIEE Study.
Self‑reported alcohol intake is an inaccurate measure, especially in heavy drinkers. The simple 4‑item CAGE questionnaire assessing alcohol use disorder was found to be positively associated with alcohol consumption and mortality. ⋯ We found a strong, graded association between the CAGE score and the risk of CVD incidence, which was independent of other risk factors for CVD. The CAGE questionnaire might be considered as an additional tool to identify individuals at high risk of CVD.
