Educational needs among physicians treating patients with atrial fibrillation: lessons for Poland from the European Society of Cardiology international educational needs assessment study.
A study by the European Society of Cardiology assessing international educational needs has identified educational and organizational barriers preventing the implementation of optimal therapy of atrial fibrillation (AF) across European countries. ⋯ The number of substantial educational gaps among physicians from Poland and other European countries is low. Nonetheless, educational programs tailored for different specialist groups separately to improve competence are warranted. There is a clear need for improvement of communication among different specialists treating patients with AF in Poland.

Changes in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level and the ratio of triglycerides to HDL-C during the first year of type 1 diabetes.
Patients in an insulin‑deficient state show reduced high‑density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‑C) levels. Insulin treatment affects lipid metabolism in this population. There have been no prospective studies evaluating changes in lipid profile after the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (T1D). ⋯ Subcutaneous insulin therapy reverses the impaired phenotype of lipoproteins during the first year of treatment. Changes in lipoprotein levels in newly diagnosed T1D differ depending on sex.

Sarcoidosis among hospitalized patients in Poland: a study based on a national hospital registry.
Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease mainly affecting the lungs, although granulomas can also involve any other organ. ⋯ Sex and age may have a significant impact on the occurrence of sarcoidosis in Poland. Changes in seasonality may suggest the role of environmental factors. These data on sarcoidosis in Poland may be helpful in comparative analyses with other European countries.

Clinical significance of cytomegalovirus and other herpes virus infections in ulcerative colitis.
Herpes virus infection leads to severe and fatal disease in individuals with suppressed immunity. In patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly those with ulcerative colitis (UC), those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, or those unresponsive to medical therapy, cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been found to be associated with significant clinical morbidity. ⋯ In this review, we discuss herpes virus infection in patients with UC, focusing on the prevalence and diagnosis of CMV infection as well as the prevalence of single or mixed infection with herpes virus (HHV‑6 and EBV) in addition to CMV. Moreover, significance of genotyping of CMV in UC is discussed.
