Review Comparative Study[The role of bioethics committees in the systems protecting scientific biomedical research participants in France and in Poland].
Bioethics committees are along with ethic regulations and rules of law one of three main pillars in the system of protection of scientific biomedical research participants. Although principal directives for bioethics committees are established by international guidelines, detailed regulations may differ in particular states. The aim of this article was to compare two bioethic committees systems: French and Polish one. ⋯ In Poland members are called on three-year-term but the rotation of members is not overwhelming since there is no limit of terms for one member. French legal solutions seems more secure for scientific bioethics research participants. For this reason, a detailed research on legislation in other countries is necessary before introducing any new regulations in Polish law.

[Analysis of current conditions concerning development of palliative care in three selected countries of the former Eastern Bloc].
Palliative care is an active and comprehensive care provided to all patients who no longer react to treatment that would bring recovery. Its main objective is to gradually improve and maintain patients' high quality of life in their end stage of disease. In Europe palliative care has developed since the 1970's, 20th century. The aim of the study was to assess the current conditions concerning development of palliative care in selected countries of the former Eastern Bloc, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, by defining the following: recognition of the term "palliative care" in the analyzed countries, the type of palliative care units existing in a given country as well as funding sources, access to opioid drugs and barriers hindering palliative care development. ⋯ The term 'palliative care' is not commonly known in either of the three countries analyzed. Full-time hospices or palliative care units function in all of these countries, and palliative care services are publicly funded, however, only in part. Patients do not have access to opioids in amounts required for regular daily use. No differences as to the main barriers hindering palliative care development between the analyzed countries were identified.

Review[The system of protection of scientific biomedical research participants in France and in Poland].
Realizing scientific biomedical research conducted on human-beings demands obeying ample ethical rules. However, states keep independence in the means of implementing deontological guidelines to legislative acts. The aim of the article is to compare rules of law relative to protection of scientific biomedical research participants in two European Union member states--France and Poland. ⋯ In protection of scientific biomedical research participants the role of state authority competent for personal data is more vital in France than it is in Poland. In France there is also National Ethics Advisory Committee whereas in Poland there is no such institution. The systems protecting scientific biomedical research participants differs therefore in both states in many vital aspects and French measures cover more types of scientific biomedical research, hence the level of participants protection in various types of research is more equitable.

Case Reports[The use of hemostatic agent Tachosil in surgical treatment of kidney cancer infiltrating liver--case report].
The right kidney cancer very rarely locally invades the liver as compared with blood metastasis which occur more frequent. In these cases, the only extensive surgical resection of part of the liver gives the opportunity to improve survival dependent on kidney cancer. In the intra-and postoperative bleeding and leakage of bile from the liver cut surface is a complication that it depends on the success of the treatment. A valuable complement to traditional ways of obtaining hemostasis is sealed section of liver collagen patches of horse, which are covered with tissue adhesive supplemented human fibrinogen and thrombin (Tachosil). The aim of this study is to present the case of 38-year-old woman with a tumor of the upper pole of the right kidney invasive by the continuity of the right lobe of liver, in which the classic methods of obtaining hemostasis supplemented using Tachosil postoperative course and a comparison with data from the literature. ⋯ Tachosil in major surgery because of locally advanced kidney cancer that invades the liver is a valuable complement to conventional surgical methods allowing for atraumatic stop bleeding and seal parenchymal liver tissue. Doing so helps to avoid early and late complications and reduce the cost of treating these complications.

Case Reports[Reversible pulmonary hypertension as a consequence of dasatinib treatment in a patient with chronic myeloid leukemia and scleroderma].
Pulmonary hypertension may be associated with many clinical conditions, including connective tissue diseases. We present a case of a patient with sclerodermia and chronic myeloid leukemia, who developed severe symptoms of pulmonary hypertension. ⋯ Sclerodermia in a previous medical history, an acknowledged risk factor for pulmonary hypertension, initially delayed the correct diagnosis. Reclassification changes the clinical prognosis of pulmonary hypertension in this specific case and allowed to terminate of specific treatment of pulmonary hypertension with good results.
