[Alterations of procalcitonin and interleukin 6 after cardiopulmonary bypass in children with congenital heart disease].
Cardiac surgery induces systemic inflammatory response that may have been implicated the postoperative organ dysfunction. This inflammatory response is thought to be produced by exposing patients to proinflammatory factors. The aim of our study was to investigate alterations in procalcitonin (PCT) concentration in peripheral blood in children as the potential early indicator of complications occurring during and after surgery in extracorporeal circulation. Additionally, we evaluated the perioperative time course of IL-6. ⋯ We conclude, that cardiac surgery with CPB did not have any influence on the secretion of PCT in children. These results suggest that IL-6 was more effective than PCT to monitor patients with a favorable outcome.

Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is a functional laryngeal dysfunction first described in the nineteenth century. It is quite frequent in patients with "refractory" asthma. It is very often treated as a steroid resistant asthma or exercise-induced bronchospasm, leading to unnecessary, aggressive asthma treatment and iatrogenic morbidity. ⋯ Fast and appropriate diagnosis of VCD is only possible with close collaboration of laryngologists and asthma specialists. The treatment of dyspnea attack in VCD involves psychological counseling, heliox application and sedative/anxiolytic agents. Long term treatment may include speech therapy, biofeedback, yoga and autohypnosis.

Status asthmaticus, the most severe form of asthma exacerbation, is a life-threatening condition. The mortality rate in status asthmaticus ranges from 3.5% to 8.3%. Therapeutic approach in acute severe asthma is based on oxygen supply, high doses of nebulised beta2-agonists and systemic corticosteroids administered intravenously or orally. ⋯ International guidelines for management of status asthmaticus have been published recently, but those recommendations often remain unknown. Thus there is an urgent need for elaboration of national standards on managing acute severe asthma and putting it into clinical practice. Status asthmaticus, especially a severe one, should be treated in a respiratory intermediate intensive care unit.

[Assessment of the release of thyroid hormones in septic shock--prognostic significance].
Septic shock is the reason of human body organs dysfunctions including the hormonal system. There are abnormal thyroid hormones releasing as well. It is also noticed that sepsis caused serious disturbances in pituitary-thyroid axis functions. This is called euthyroid sick syndrom - (ESS). ⋯ This study show that low TSH serum level could be a significant prognostic factor of death in patient with septic shock especially with low fT3 serum level. The results also suggest that ESS could be a consequence of pituitary TSH releasing disturbances.

Clinical Trial[Assessment of efficacy of migraine attack treatment with lysine acetylsalicylate and metoclopramide].
Migraine is a common medical condition affecting nearly 10% of population in Poland. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy, tolerability and safety of migraine abortive treatment with the combination of lysine acetylsalicylate and metoclopramide (1620 mg LAS + 10 mg MTC--Migpriv). 1620 patients with migraine, meeting International Headache Society (IHS) criteria were included in the study. ⋯ Reported adverse events were rare and short lasting. The study showed that metoclopramide was well tolerated and effective at relieving migraine attack symptoms.
