Diabetes during Ramadan - PRE-approach model: presentation, risk stratification, education.
Fasting (Sawm) during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and mandatory for all Muslim healthy adults. Most of the Muslim diabetic patients insist on fasting in Ramadan despite their exemption. Due to paucity of literature, diabetes during Ramadan is underestimated and the statistics are not reflecting the actual reality. The aim of this study is to highlight the demographics in diabetic Muslim population and emphasize its ramifications on Ramadan fasting. ⋯ It is vital to empower the healthcare workers and the patients in the frontlines with appropriate information. To preempt and minimize the problems faced by the diabetic patients who fast, available resources should be mobilized to efficiently and effectively reach out these patients. Diabetic patient educational guidelines about Ramadan fasting should be disseminated and translated into major regional languages to minimize the complications. Diabetic patients who are stable, free of deteriorating complications and able to manage can be allowed to fast.

Case ReportsCauda equina syndrome: evaluation of the clinical outcome.
Cauda equina syndrome is a rare but highly impairing syndrome involving lower limbs as well as urinary, defecatory and sexual function. In the literature the most investigated sphincter dysfunction is the urinary. Bowel and sexual function are often overlooked since they become more relevant after the acute phase. ⋯ Our results show that a long-term follow-up is mandatory to evaluate the real outcome of surgical managed cauda equine syndrome because short-term evaluation could be misleading about the residual capacity of late neurologic improving. Despite the relatively low number of cases evaluated, our results confirm that early diagnosing and treating the syndrome are relevant for the final outcome.

The cyclic hexapeptide AcF attenuates sepsis-induced acute lung injury and mortality in rats.
The purpose of this study was to elucidate the possible beneficial effects of AcF on acute lung injury (ALI) in a rat model of sepsis. ⋯ AcF administration ameliorates acute lung injury in a rat model of sepsis induced by CLP. AcF can be developed as a novel treatment for severe sepsis-induced ALI.

The effects of mobile phones on apoptosis in cerebral tissue: an experimental study on rats.
The concern about mobile phone effects is increasing as the number of users increasing too. Different studies have different results, so this topic is still open to discussion. Aim of this report was to investigate the effects of the mobile phones on the Bcl-2 gene and p53 proteins in rat brains. ⋯ Our results showed that the electro-magnetic waves emitted by the mobile phones may have effect on apoptosis. Besides, obtained data revealed that more realistic application of mobile phones during experiments is more important as expected.

Pulmonary hypertension and beta blockers: where do we stand? Where are we going?
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a chronic, progressive debilitating disease and associated with poor prognosis despite the novel numerous treatment options. Beta-blockers constitute a cornerstone in left heart failure treatment; however, we still don't know the role of beta-blockers on PH and they are considered relatively contraindicated in patients with PH because of the possible negative effect on these patients' hemodynamics and exercise capacity. ⋯ As it is well-known, right heart function is the main prognostic determinants of the PH. The purpose of this chapter is to present the use of beta-blockers for the treatment of PH, the purported mechanisms of action, previously conducted animal studies and clinical trials.
