Ginger potentiates the effects of silymarin on liver fibrosis induced by CCL4: the role of galectin-8.
The liver is an important organ that is actively involved in metabolic functions and targeted by a number of toxicants. Galectin-8 (Gal-8) is downregulated in liver fibrosis. Reduced Gal-8 expression correlates with inflammation and metastasis. Therefore, this study aimed to further investigate the benefits of combined administration of silymarin and ginger for CCl4-induced liver injuries in mice. We also investigated the mechanisms underlying the hepatoprotective activity of these herbal drugs and evaluated the role of Gal-8 and apoptosis in liver fibrosis. ⋯ Gal-8 is a diagnostic and/or prognostic glycoprotein for liver fibrosis. The combination of silymarin and ginger has protective liver action and reduces the severity and incidence of liver fibrosis.

Comparative StudyComparison of genioglossus muscle activity and efficiency of dexmedetomidine or propofol during drug-induced sleep endoscopy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the haemodynamic and respiratory effects of dexmedetomidine vs. propofol in patients with OSAHS during the drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE), and analyze simultaneously the electromyography of genioglossus muscle. ⋯ A greater worsening of the cardio-respiratory basal values was noted after sleep induction with Propofol and same results were obtained confronting EMG of genioglossus muscle data.

Comparative StudyEffect of propofol and sevoflurane anesthesia on postoperative cognitive function and levels of Aβ-42 and Tau in patients undergoing hepatectomy.
To investigate the effect of propofol and sevoflurane anesthesia on postoperative cognitive function. ⋯ Compared with sevoflurane anesthesia, propofol may improve postoperative Aβ-42 and Tau protein levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, and ameliorate postoperative cognitive function.

LncRNA MALAT1 expression inhibition suppresses tongue squamous cell carcinoma proliferation, migration and invasion by inactivating PI3K/Akt pathway and downregulating MMP-9 expression.
LncRNA MALAT1 has been proved to be involved in the development of various types of human cancers while the involvement of MALAT1 in tongue squamous cell carcinoma has not been reported. In view of this, our study aimed to investigate the functionality of MALAT1 in tongue squamous cell carcinoma. ⋯ LncRNA MALAT1 expression inhibition can inhibit the proliferation, migration and invasion of tongue cancer cells by inactivating the PI3K/Akt pathway and downregulating MMP-9. MALAT1 may serve as a target for the treatment of tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

MiR-21 inhibitor improves locomotor function recovery by inhibiting IL-6R/JAK-STAT pathway-mediated inflammation after spinal cord injury in model of rat.
To investigate the function of miRNA-21 and interleukin-6 receptor/Janus Kinase-Signal transducer and activator of transcription (IL-6R/JAK-STAT) pathway in microglia on inflammatory responses after spinal cord injury (SCI). ⋯ Inhibition of miR-21 can promote the recovery of spinal cord injury by down-regulating IL-6R/JAK-STAT signaling pathway and inhibiting inflammation.
