[Role of nitric oxide in hemodynamic and extravascular lung water in a dog endotoxin shock model].
To verify the effects of nitric oxide pathway modification on hemodynamics and extravascular lung water during sepsis. ⋯ The inhibition of nitric oxide synthesis has serious adverse hemodynamic and oxygenational consequences in our endotoxin shock model. We speculate that nitric oxide inhibition has no foreseeable therapeutic role in early stage of septic shock.

[Nitric oxide delivery through ventilator and its toxic oxidative product nitrogen dioxide].
To observe nitric oxide(NO) delivery through mechanically ventilator. NO is rapidly converted to nitrogen dioxide(NO2)in oxygen(O2) environments. ⋯ NO(800 ppm) was blended with compressed air, delivered to the high-pressure air inlet of a Siemens Servo 900C or VIP BIRD ventilator is a portable, accurate, and adaptable system to deliver NO. During NO inhalation, VIP BIRD ventilator is more adaptable while low VE. Servo 900C ventilator is more adaptable while high VE.

[Role of energy metabolism in nutrition management of critically ill patients].
Indirect calorimetric measurements were made with a MedGraphics Critical Care Monitor (CCM) desktop analysis system in the observation of critically ill and malnourished patient's energy expenditure. In 15 critically ill patients, predicted energy requirements based on 1.75 times BEE calculated by Harris-Benedict formula or corrected Harris-Benedict formula averaged 32.7% and 27.8% greater than metabolic expenditure measured by indirect calorimetry respectively. ⋯ While the malnourished patients were provided with 1.5 x REE in energy intake, the malnourished state could be reversed. We believed that the critically ill and malnourished patients' energy expenditures are better measured than predicted and their nutritional regimens should be guided under the computerized indirect calorimetry.

[Molecular screening and prenatal diagnosis of the deletional alpha-thalassemia by polymerase chain reaction amplification].
For the genetic counselling, 8,432 blood samples from Chinese couples were screened for detecting alpha-thalassemia in Guangzhou city. The positive diagnosis of 646 (7.66%) alpha-thalassemia patients was made. ⋯ This mutation was not found in the remaining one with alpha-thalassemia compound Hb Q. We also used this assay to analyse DNA samples from cord blood in 6 pregnancies at risk of Bart's hydrops fetalis, in 1 at risk of Hb H disease for prenatal diagnosis.

[Protective action of taurine on ischemia-reperfusion liver injury in rats and its mechanism].
The protective effect of taurine on ischemia-reperfusion damages of rat perfused liver and its possible mechanism were investigated. Reflow with 20 mmol/L taurine markedly ameliorated reperfusion injury of post-ischemic liver as evidenced by reduction of lipid peroxidation (LPO), mitochondrial calcium overload in hepatocytes, as well as leakage of intracellular LDH and protein. Furthermore, taurine could significantly suppress in vitro LPO formation of hepatocyte plasma membrane induced by generating system of free radicals, inhibit calcium uptake and promote calcium release by mitochondria in addition to a membrane stabilizing action on rat isolated hepatic lysosome. The results demonstrated that taurine possesses significant protective efficacy on ischemia-reperfusion liver damage, and that the mechanism of its anti-hepatic injury may be mainly related to inhibiting LPO formation, regulating cellular calcium homeostasis and stabilizing biological membrane.
