Hip fractures are ranked among the frequent injuries. These fractures have been often coupled with high energy trauma in children and in patients with normal bone structure, low energy trauma and osteoporotic fracture (fragility fracture) is typical in elder patients. Hip fractures are divided into five groups: femoral head fracture, femoral neck fracture, pertrochanteric, intertrochateric and subtrochanteric fracture. ⋯ Subtrochanteric fractures can be fixed also intramedullary (nails - PFN long, PFN A long) and extramedullary (plates - DCS dynamic condylar screw, proximal femoral LCP - locking compression plate). Open reduction with internal plate fixation is advantageous for pathological fractures, as biopsy sampling can be performed. Hip fracture rehabilitation is integral part of the treatment, including walking on crutches or with a walker with partial weight bearing for at least six weeks.

[Irreversible electroporation: local, non-thermal, ablation therapy of malignant tumours].
Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a new method of local therapy of malign tumours based on bioelectric effect of electrical current. Short electric pulses with high voltage create nano size-pores in tumour cell membranes resulting in apoptosis of the exposed cells. The purpose of our study was to verify the IRE technique performed percutaneously under CT navigation and to assess effects of application of this method in early stages of primary and secondary hepatic, pancreatic, renal and pulmonary tumours. ⋯ IRE is a new, mini-invasive therapeutic method applicable to local treatment of malignant tumours in cases where surgical approach is technically unfeasible or excessively risky. On the basis of first experience in a small cohort of patients IRE performed under CT navigation appears to be an effective and safe ablation method with a large therapeutic potential. Its results will however need to be assessed within a longer time horizon and in a larger cohort of population.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic syndrome characterized by dysfunction of pain processing and regulation. Although the definite etiology has not been recognized yet, the key role in the pathogenesis of this syndrome probably plays the central sensitization process with the development of chronic (central) pain and other associated symptoms (fatigue, stiffness, sleep disorders, cognitive and vegetative disturbance). ⋯ New drugs introduced to the therapy in the recent years can have positive effect on symptom reduction and improvement of patients quality of life. Key words: fibromyalgia, chronic pain, fatigue, central sensitization.

Isolated calf vein thrombosis in the population of patients with deep vein thrombosis is found approximately in 10 to 25 % of cases. We present 3 cases of calf vein thrombosis which occurred due to unusual causes. Specific characteristics of this form of thromboembolic disease are discussed and compared to proximal deep vein thrombosis with emphasis to symptoms, risk of complications, prognosis and therapeutic approach.

The goal of this work was to acquire data concerning characteristics, ways of assessing presented documentation, publishing attitudes and other related activities of ethics committees established according to the Act No. 378/2007 Coll., on Pharmaceuticals, and to use evaluated data subsequently for mapping actual state of assessing clinical trial projects with emphasis to observance of legislation, as well as description of differences between individual ethics committees. ⋯ Being able to focus only on a formal part of ethics committees' activity, it is possible to say that individual ethics committees differ from each other particularly in the general characteristics, conditions made for their work and in some trial aspect, but it doesn't automatically mean serious law breach and the immediate need of rectification. It seems that not all members of ethics committees realize adequately the seriousness of their actions from the ethical point of view at current research done with human subjects.
