The objective of this qualitative study was to understand the meaning of Intensive Care Unit (ITU) hospitalization for the patients' relatives. From April to December 2003, 16 relatives of patients admitted in the ICU of a teaching hospital in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, were interviewed. Front the thematic analysis emerged the following categories: the admission to the ICU; the impact of separation and family feelings of impotence; lack of consideration and reduced number of visits; patient's lack of privacy. Neglect and lack of consideration towards the patients' relatives by intensive care professionals were observed.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
The measurement of musculoskeletal pain intensity: a comparison of four methods.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of four scales of pain intensity measurement in patients with musculoskeletal disorders and low educational level. Verbal rating scale, face scale, visual analogy scale, and numeric scale were used. ⋯ Numerical scale presented the highest reliability value (r = 0.99), and verbal rating scale, had the lowest reliability value (r = 0.88). The numerical scale was considered the easiest to understand and to complete, while the most difficult was the visual analogy scale.

This study aimed at analyzing health professionals' understanding of the bioethics principle of autonomy, including issues that involve its utilization. Documents from 13 journals indexed in Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), published between 2000 and 2004, were analyzed. ⋯ The following categories emerged: autonomy as a bioethical principle per se, autonomy as rescuing the human person in technical-scientific advancement processes, and autonomy as an instrument for reflection and action. It was concluded that bioethics aids the reflection on professional practices, overcoming the individualism generated by progress, stimulating inter-personal relationships, and defending rights that ensure human dignity.

This article aims at describing the context of the development of the Mother-Kangaroo Method at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a public hospital, and discussing the reasons why some women/mothers do not seem stimulated to maintain skin contact with their premature babies. The methodology included three steps: reality problematization, literature review, and systematic reflection aiming at solving the identified problem. It was concluded that the perception of the neonatal team as to mother-newly born infant bond needs to be changed, in the sense of understanding that often the mothers' reaction are different from those expected by the health professionals.

Records of cardiac arrest are not usually made, or are incomplete, and should contain more information. This study aimed at applying a tool developed to record in-hospital cardiac arrest. ⋯ In the analysis of entry per data set, the average was higher than 70%. It was concluded that the tool supplied the needs of cardiac arrest recording for this hospital.
