Uterine perforation is an uncommon complication of intrauterine devices (IUDs). Perforating IUDs can migrate to various locations but paradoxically are rarely found in ovaries or broad ligament. ⋯ After visualization by ultrasound, the IUD was laparoscopically removed. We suggest early use of ultrasound in cases of potential IUD migration, particularly in high-risk patients and when IUD insertion causes pain.

Transcranial Doppler detection of venous-to-arterial circulation shunts: criteria for patent foramen ovale.
As paradoxical embolism is associated with stroke in young adults, migraine, and decompression sickness, the detection of venous-to-arterial circulation shunt (v-aCS), such as patent foramen ovale (PFO), is increasingly important. We compared a rigorous transcranial Doppler (TCD) protocol with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) to develop criteria for PFO. ⋯ The standardized TCD protocol is sensitive in the diagnosis of PFO and with the use of provocation maneuvers measures the functional importance of v-aCS more accurately than TEE.

We report a case of a 36-year-old male who presented with a pulsatile mass at the left temporal region after a head injury. Duplex sonographic examination confirmed the diagnosis of traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery. Imaging showed the pseudoaneurysm was partially thrombosed.

To examine the hemiplegic shoulders for soft-tissue injury by musculoskeletal sonography and to determine the relationship between the motor functions of the upper extremity and these injuries, which play an important role in hemiplegic shoulder pain and may impede rehabilitation. ⋯ Acute stroke patients with poor upper limb motor functions are more prone to soft-tissue injury of the shoulder during rehabilitation.

To evaluate the ability of high-frequency sonography to evaluate the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). ⋯ The LFCN can be seen in the groin with the aid of sonography.
