To assess the impact of the treatment guidelines on the management of paracetamol self poisoning in accident and emergency (A&E) departments. ⋯ Regularly updated guidelines in the management of paracetamol poisoning should be displayed in A&E departments so that medical and nursing personnel have access to the best current information on the treatment of poisoning with this frequently used drug.

Abscess formation in the infratemporal and temporal fossae is rare. Their presentation to accident and emergency departments is unusual and consequently may cause problems with diagnosis. Once diagnosed, treatment should be aggressive with intravenous antibiotics and surgical drainage.

To define the role of the accident and emergency (A&E) short stay ward by a survey of departments in the United Kingdom and review of published reports. ⋯ Short stay provision is highly variable in the United Kingdom. While there are many reports of well run short stay units, consistent evidence of clinical value and cost-effectiveness compared to other methods of care is lacking. Further comparative studies are required to define the role of the A&E short stay ward.
