This paper describes the deployment of a platform to enable processing of currently uncharted high frequency, high fidelity, synchronous data from medical devices. Such a platform would support the next generation of informatics solutions for neonatal intensive care. We present Artemis, a platform for real-time enactment of clinical knowledge as it relates to multidimensional data analysis and clinical research. Through specific deployment examples at two different neonatal intensive care units, we demonstrate that Artemis supports: 1) instantiation of clinical rules; 2) multidimensional analysis; 3) distribution of services for critical care via cloud computing; and 4) accomplishing 1 through 3 using current technology without a negative impact on patient care.

The SignOut Discharge Summary System: using workflow byproducts to pre-populate and assemble discharge summaries.
At the time of hospital discharge, communication between inpatient and outpatient physicians is poor. Multiple studies demonstrate that discharge summaries, a means of improving information exchange between inpatient and outpatient providers, are frequently not available to the outpatient provider at the time of the post discharge visit. ⋯ The system has generated 78740 D/C summaries for 17 specialties since going live July 2005. Overall SDSS is responsible for 69% of all hospital discharge summaries and SDSS discharge summaries on average are available 1.91 days after discharge.

Developing a surgical simulation is a very complex task, requiring various components and usually the involvement of multiple people. As the complexity of the simulator increases, the functionality and the functional semantics of the components become very challenging to manage. In order to mitigate these issues, in this work we introduce a novel language that facilitates the development of surgical simulations and also supports semantic embedding in the surgical simulation development without extra programming effort.

Single and multi-user virtual patient design in the virtual world.
This research addresses the need for the flexible creation of immersive clinical training simulations for multiple interacting participants and virtual patients by using scalable open source virtual world technologies. Initial development of single-user surgical virtual patients has been followed by that of multi-user multiple casualties in a field environment and an acute hospital emergency department. The authors aim to validate and extend their reproducible framework for eventual application of virtual worlds to whole hospital major incident response simulation and to multi-agency, pan-geographic mass casualty exercises.

Serious adverse event reporting in a medical device information system.
The paper describes the design of a module that manages Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) reporting within a Clinical investigation on Medical devices. This module is integrated in a Medical Device Information System (MEDIS) that collects data and documents exchanged between applicants and the National Competent Authority during the clinical investigation lifecycle. To improve information sharing among different stakeholders and systems MEDIS design and developed were based on the HL7 v.3 standards. The paper provides a conceptual model on SAEs based on HL7 RIM that underlines Medical Device characteristics.
