Simultaneous quantification of 17 immune mediators in aqueous humour from patients with corneal rejection.
To simultaneously quantitate and compare the concentrations of 17 immune mediators: (1) the cytokines interleukin-1beta, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-7, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-13, IL-17, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, interferon-gamma; (2) the growth factors granulocyte-monocyte colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), and (3) the chemokines CXCL-8, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and macrophage inflammatory protein-1beta in aqueous humour from patients with corneal rejection and patients with a non-inflammatory condition in the anterior chamber. ⋯ The Luminex 100 multiplex array assay is very efficient in simultaneous quantitation of multiple immune mediators in small volumes of aqueous humour. A total of 17 immune mediators were increased in aqueous humour from rejection patients. This underlines the complex immunological interactions of the rejection process.

Case ReportsIsolated bilateral optic neuritis in acute disseminated encephalomyelitis.
We present a 4-year-old girl with isolated visual loss related to a bilateral oedematous optic neuropathy of unknown origin, occurring after an episode of viral illness. ⋯ Bilateral isolated optic neuritis in childhood may be the only presenting symptom in acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, which requires appropriate evaluation and therapeutic management.

Case ReportsCombined central retinal artery and vein occlusion in Churg-Strauss syndrome: case report.
To describe a rare case of Churg-Strauss syndrome presenting with severe visual loss due to a combined central retinal vein and artery occlusion. ⋯ Combined central retinal artery and vein occlusion can occur in Churg-Strauss syndrome. We suggest that regional vasculitis may be the pathological mechanism underlying the vascular occlusions observed in our case. The condition carries a very poor prognosis for vision, due to the resulting retinal ischaemia, and a poor general prognosis due to the late stage of the systemic disease. Corticosteroids should be instigated promptly in order to prevent further systemic or ocular vasculitis.

Topography of the posterior arteries supplying the eye and relations to the optic nerve.
The aim of the study was to investigate the arterial blood supply of the intraorbital part of the optic nerve. ⋯ This article confirms the well known variability of the arterial circulation of the intraorbital part of the optic nerve. Better understanding of the arterial anatomy of the intraorbital part of the optic nerve should enable appropriate modification of surgical techniques.
