Retracted PublicationRelationships of COX2 and MMP12 genetic polymorphisms with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease risk: a meta-analysis.
We performed the present meta-analysis in an attempt to confirm the correlation of genetic polymorphisms in the COX2 and MMP12 genes with the susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We searched English database such as PubMed, CISCOM, CINAHL, Web of Science, Google Scholar and several Chinese database for meta-analysis. There were no specific language restrictions. ⋯ Nevertheless, no positive relation was detected between MMP12 rs2276109 variant and the risk of COPD. Our meta-analysis indicates that COX2 and MMP12 genetic polymorphisms may be strongly implicated in the development of COPD, especially for the COX2 rs20417 and MMP12 rs652438 polymorphisms. Thus, COX2 and MMP12 genetic polymorphisms could potentially be utilized as helpful biomarkers for early diagnosis of COPD.

ReviewMitochondrial dynamic changes in health and genetic diseases.
Mitochondria are highly specialized in function, but mitochondrial and, therefore, cellular integrity is maintained through their dynamic nature. Through the frequent processes of fusion and fission, mitochondria continuously change in shape and adjust function to meet cellular requirements. ⋯ Mutations in the genes encoding mitochondrial fusion/fission proteins, such as MFN2 and OPA1, have been associated with an increasing number of genetic disorders, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A (CMT2A) and autosomal dominant optic atrophy. In this review, we address the mitochondrial dynamic changes in several important genetic diseases, which will bring the new insight of clinical relevance of mitochondrial genetics.

Long-term ketamine abuse induces cystitis in rats by impairing the bladder epithelial barrier.
Long-term ketamine abuse is known to affect the lower urinary tract and produce symptoms of cystitis. However, the pathophysiology and causative mechanism of the changes in bladder function remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the existence of ketamine-induced cystitis in a rat model and characterize the underlining mechanisms. ⋯ Ketamine-treated rats showed thickened bladder epithelial layer, increased expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and occludin, and decreased expression of zonula occludens-1 in the bladder wall. Ketamine, or its urinary metabolites, disrupted the proliferation of bladder epithelial cells, resulting in defected bladder epithelial barrier. Subsequent leakage of urinary potassium causes a stress response in the bladder and provokes cystitis.

Meta AnalysisThe role of D-dimers in the diagnosis of acute aortic dissection.
Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a life threatening cardiovascular medical emergency with a poor prognosis. To explore the utility of D-dimers (DD) in the diagnosis of AAD, we performed a prospective study and conducted a meta-analysis of previous studies. 368 suspected patients were enrolled, including AAD n = 89, PE n = 12, AMI n = 167, normal controls n = 100. All patients had a DD test immediately after admission. ⋯ In conclusion, our results suggest that plasma DD levels cannot add to the certainty of AAD diagnosis and it is not a good biomarker for AAD. In the future, prospective research on patients from many parts of the world is warranted to validate our findings. In addition, different controls, methods of plasma DD assays and other factors should be considered.

Activation of GRs-Akt-nNOs-NR2B signaling pathway by second dose GR agonist contributes to exacerbated hyperalgesia in a rat model of radicular pain.
Central Akt, neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunit 2B (NR2B) play key roles in the development of neuropathic pain. Here we investigate the effects of glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) on the expression and activation of spinal Akt, nNOS and NR2B after chronic compression of dorsal root ganglia (CCD). Thermal hyperalgesia test and mechanical allodynia test were used to measure rats after intrathecal injection of GR antagonist mifepristone or GR agonist dexamethasone for 21 days postoperatively. ⋯ However, hyperalgesia was induced by intrathecal injection of dexamethasone on days 12 to 14 after surgery. Treatment of dexamethasone increased the expression and phosphorylation levels of spinal Akt, nNOS, GR and NR2B time dependently, whereas administration of mifepristone downregulated the expression of these proteins significantly. GRs activated spinal Akt-nNOS/NR2B pathway play important roles in the development of neuropathic pain in a time-dependent manner.
