Detection of mutations in TERT, the genes for telomerase reverse transcriptase, in Indian patients of aplastic anaemia: a pilot study.
Detection of mutations in the genes for telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) in patients of apparently acquired aplastic anaemia. ⋯ The present study was undertaken to evaluate the mutation spectrum in the genes implicated in aplastic anaemia, i.e. TERT, DKC1, NOP10, and NHP2 in small case-control group (5 + 6). We have been successful in finding mutations in TERTand DKC1 while no population specific mutations were found in NOP10 and NHP2. The statistical significance of these mutations is difficult to establish as the sample size was too low. None of the patients with TERT mutations had a response to immunosuppressive therapy.

Nosocomial infections in the medical ICU: a retrospective study highlighting their prevalence, microbiological profile and impact on ICU stay and mortality.
1. To study the prevalence of nosocomial infections in the Medical ICU. 2. To determine common microorganisms causing nosocomial infections in the ICU and their antibiotic- sensitivity profile. 3. To study the impact of nosocomial infections on ICU stay and mortality. ⋯ The nosocomial infection rate in our ICU was in keeping with the rate in many industrialised countries. The most common site of nosocomial infection was the respiratory tract, followed by the urinary tract. Acinetobacter was the commonest respiratory isolate, whereas Pseudomonas was the commonest urinary isolate. One fourth of Acinetobacter isolates were multidrug resistant. Nosocomial infections resulted in a statistically significant increase in ICU stay; whereas there was no impact on ICU mortality.

Ebola viruses are the causative agents of a severe form of viral haemorrhagic fever in man, designated Ebola haemorrhagic fever, and are endemic in regions of central Africa. The recent west African outbreak of Ebolavirus has brought this filoviral infection again in limelight, Indian government has issued guidelines to various airports to screen travelers coming from Africa and middle east Haj pilgrims to keep a check on this highly virulent infection. ⋯ Management of these patients with symptomatic therapy is the current strategy which is followed. There is absence of any effective vaccine so further research is warranted in this direction.
