We have studied 50 children affected with acute meningococcal disease (AMD). The ages of the children varied between 4 months and 12.58 years, with a mean age of 4.58 years. By using the shock state and DIC syndrome, both of which are indications of the severity of the illness, an evaluation of the discriminatory capacity was done with regard to significantly associate variables and 3 scores, Bjorvatn, Leclerc and PRISM, throughout 8 intervals within the first 48 hours of hospital treatment. ⋯ Leukopenia and disseminated purpura were the best variables in order to discriminate shock and DIC, respectively. The greatest capacity for the diagnosis of the shock state and DIC syndrome were registered during the 0-6 hour period and the 0-12 hour period, respectively. The prognosis improved if the child remained alive 12 hours after the treatment had begun.

In order to evaluate the programs of vaccination against tetanus, we have studied the presence of specific antibodies in a sample of children and adolescents from our region. We used a passive hemagglutination test, corroborating the results by a biological assay based on toxin-neutralization. Among the subjects investigated, 93.2% (551/591) had neutralizing toxin-antibodies at a protective level (> or = 0.01 ui/ml). ⋯ The results show an excellent immunization coverage among the childhood population in our region. They also confirm the high effectiveness of this vaccine. However, this high protection was not found among people above the adolescent period.

As part of an epidemiological study on cardiovascular risk factors among children and adolescents in Navarra, 5,829 children were studied. These children, of both sexes, were between 4 and 17 years of age and were selected at random from the public and private school population in Navarra. The prevalence of hypertension (HT) was 7.17 +/- 0.34%, hyperlipemia (LDL/HDL > 2.2) 15.70 +/- 0.49% and obesity (Quetelet I) 3.96 +/- 0.26%. ⋯ Hypertension was not associated with hypercholesterolemia (defined as LDL/HDL > 2.2). The association with hyperlipemia (measured by LDL/HDL) disappeared when the obesity effect was eliminated. It is deduced from these factors that if we don't take preventative health measures, the present children and adolescents from Navarra will suffer a high cardiovascular morbi-mortality when they become adults.
