Although hypo- and hyperchloremia have been associated with worsening renal outcomes, there has been no study that correlates hypo- and hyperchloremia and the incidence of contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI). A total of 13,088 patients with less than 2.0 mg/dL of serum creatinine (Cr) who underwent contrast-enhanced abdominal CT (CECT) were included. Patients were divided into 3 groups based on Cl (the hypo-, normo- and hyperchloremia groups). ⋯ On multivariate logistic regression, hypochloremia was significantly associated with the incidence of CA-AKI compared with normochloremia (1.382, P = 0.002). Moreover, hypochloremia was still significantly associated with the incidence of CA-AKI in 'Normal Cr group' compared with normochloremia (1.314, P = 0.015), while hyperchloremia did not show significant association with CA-AKI incidence. In conclusion, hypochloremia might be associated with the incidence of CA-AKI even in patients who have normal-range Cr levels.

Training can induce cross-modal plasticity in the human cortex. A well-known example of this phenomenon is the recruitment of visual areas for tactile and auditory processing. It remains unclear to what extent such plasticity is associated with changes in anatomy. ⋯ Previous studies show that the early visual cortex can be functionally recruited for tactile discrimination, including recognition of Braille characters. Our results demonstrate that reorganization in this region induced by tactile training can also be anatomical. This change most likely reflects a strengthening of existing connectivity between the peripheral visual cortex and somatosensory cortices, which suggests a putative mechanism for cross-modal recruitment of visual areas.

In this study, we examined the associations of general and central obesity and hypertension among Chinese children. Data was collected from 1626 children aged 7-16 years and their parents in four mega-cities across China. Mixed effect models examined associations of general and central obesity with hypertension, and between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). ⋯ The prevalence of general obesity, central obesity, and hypertension was high among Chinese children in the four mega-cities across China. Children's BMI, WC, and WHtR were positively associated with their SBP and DBP. Obese children were 3-6 times more likely to have hypertension.

Reliable electroencephalography (EEG) signatures of transitions between consciousness and unconsciousness under anaesthesia have not yet been identified. Herein we examined network changes using graph theoretical analysis of high-density EEG during patient-titrated propofol-induced sedation. Responsiveness was used as a surrogate for consciousness. ⋯ Interestingly, during transitions of responsive states, increased beta connectivity was noted relative to consciousness and unconsciousness, again with increased local efficiency. Abrupt network changes are evident in the transitions in responsiveness, with increased beta band power/connectivity marking transitions between responsive states, while the delta power/connectivity changes were consistent with the fading of consciousness using its surrogate responsiveness. These results provide novel insights into the neural correlates of these behavioural transitions and EEG signatures for monitoring the levels of consciousness under sedation.

Six-month efficacy of platelet-rich plasma for carpal tunnel syndrome: A prospective randomized, single-blind controlled trial.
Recently, a few small reports with short follow-up period have shown clinical benefits of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for peripheral neuropathy including one pilot study and one small, non-randomized trial in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Therefore, we conducted a randomized, single-blind, controlled trial to assess the 6-month effect of PRP in patients with CTS. Sixty patients with unilateral mild-to-moderate CTS were randomized into two groups of 30, namely the PRP and control groups. ⋯ The evaluation was performed before treatment and at 1, 3, and 6 months post-injection. The PRP group exhibited a significant reduction in the VAS score, BCTQ score, and CSA of MN compared to the those of control group 6 months post-treatment (p < 0.05). Our study demonstrates that PRP is a safe modality that effectively relieves pain and improves disability in the patients with CTS.
