The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence and mortality of Terson syndrome in patients with treated subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in South Korea. In this nationwide, population-based study, we used the National Health Insurance(NHI) database (2011-2015) to identify patients aged ≥18 years. Newly diagnosed non-traumatic SAH, treated using clipping or coil embolization, were identified, and Terson syndrome was defined as newly diagnosed retinal or vitreous hemorrhage within 3 months of SAH diagnosis. ⋯ The mortality rate of Terson syndrome in patients with tSAH was not different from that in those without Terson syndrome (4.08% vs. 7.30%; p = 0.089). This was the first nationwide epidemiological study of Terson syndrome using a population-based database. The incidence of Terson syndrome in patients with tSAH was higher in those age under 40 than in those aged 40 or over.

Among hematological cancers, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) are the most common leukemia in children and elderly people respectively. Some patients do not respond to chemotherapy treatments and it is necessary to complement it with immunotherapy-based treatments such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) therapy, which is one of the newest and more effective treatments against these cancers and B-cell lymphoma. Although complete remission results are promising, CAR T cell therapy presents still some risks for the patients, including cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and neurotoxicity. ⋯ We studied the efficacy of NK cells from adult peripheral blood (AB) and umbilical cord blood (CB) against different target cells in order to determine the best source for CAR therapy. AB CAR-NK cells are slightly better at killing CD19 presenting target cells and CB NK cells are easier to stimulate and they have more stable number from donor to donor. We conclude that CAR-NK cells from both sources have their advantages to be an alternative and safer candidate for CAR therapy.

CD206, a mannose receptor, is mainly expressed on the surface of alternatively activated macrophages where it acts as a pattern recognition receptor and plays a role in innate and adaptive immunity. This study investigated serum soluble CD206 (sCD206) levels in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and examined their clinical significance. sCD206 concentrations were measured in the sera of two independent cohorts with CAP (127 and 125 patients, respectively) and 42 controls. The expression of CD206 in the lung from autopsied cases was also examined. ⋯ Importantly, even fatal CAP patients classified as PSI I-IV, CURB65 0-2 or age <75 years had comparatively higher levels of sCD206 than those classified as PSI V, CURB-65 3-5 or age ≥75 years. Immunohistochemically, the infiltration of CD206+ macrophages was found in the lungs of fatal cases. Elevated levels of sCD206 are associated with CAP prognosis, suggesting sCD206 might be a potential biomarker to predict severity for CAP.

We characterized the volume kinetics of crystalloid solutions (Ringer's lactate solution and 5% dextrose water) and colloid solutions (6% tetrastarch and 10% pentastarch) by nonlinear mixed-effects modeling in healthy volunteers. We also assessed whether the bioelectrical impedance analysis parameters are significant covariates for volume kinetic parameters. Twelve male volunteers were randomly allocated to four groups, and each group received the four fluid solutions in specified sequences, separated by 1-week intervals to avoid any carryover effects. ⋯ Extracellular water was a significant covariate for the peripheral volume of distribution at baseline in the volume kinetic model of Ringer's lactate solution. When the same amount was administered, the colloid solutions had ~4 times more plasma expansion effect than did the crystalloid solutions. Starches with larger molecular weights maintained the volume expansion effect longer than those with smaller molecular weights.

Treatment-resistant epilepsy is a common and debilitating neurological condition, for which neurosurgical cure is possible. Despite undergoing nearly identical ablation procedures however, individuals with treatment-resistant epilepsy frequently exhibit heterogeneous outcomes. We hypothesized that treatment response may be related to the brain regions to which MR-guided laser ablation volumes are functionally connected. ⋯ In contrast, ablations that led to seizure-freedom were more functionally connected to prefrontal cortices. Here, we demonstrate that underlying normative neural circuitry may in part explain heterogenous outcomes following ablation procedures in different brain regions. These findings may ultimately inform target selection for ablative epilepsy surgery based on normative intrinsic connectivity of the targeted volume.
