Non-invasive, contrast-free microvascular imaging of human thyroids can be potentially beneficial in reducing the large number of benign biopsies of suspicious nodules. However, motion incurred by thyroid due to its proximity to the pulsating carotid artery significantly impacts the visualization of blood flow in small vessels. Singular value based spatiotemporal clutter filtering (SVD-STF) improves the performance of tissue rejection in the presence of motion. ⋯ The average ensemble cross-correlation coefficient of the thyroid ultrasound images were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the longitudinal view than in the transverse view. The largest improvement in SNR and CNR of the estimated PD images upon motion correction was observed in the longitudinal view (12.95 ± 3.76 dB and 16.48 ± 4.6 dB) than in the transverse view (3.72 ± 0.894 dB and 6.217 ± 1.689 dB). These preliminary results show that motion encountered by the thyroid due to carotid pulsations can be effectively tracked and corrected in the longitudinal view relative to transverse, which is important for reliably visualizing the underlying blood flow.

Idiopathic pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (IPPFE) is a rare subtype of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia that consists of alveolar septal elastosis and intra-alveolar collagenosis, which is predominantly located in the upper lobes. The aim of this study was to examine the remodeling of the pulmonary arteries in patients with IPPFE. This study included 18 patients with IPPFE, 24 patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and 5 patients without pulmonary disease as controls. ⋯ The percentage of medial thickness did not differ statistically between IPPFE and IPF. However, the medial elastic fiber score in IPPFE was also significantly larger than that in IPF and control lungs. These results suggest that collagenous thickening of the adventitia and medial elastosis are distinct histological features in the muscular pulmonary arteries of patients with IPPFE.

Vitamin D Supplementation in Overweight/obese Asian Indian Women with Prediabetes Reduces Glycemic Measures and Truncal Subcutaneous Fat: A 78 Weeks Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial (PREVENT-WIN Trial).
Vitamin D deficiency may contribute to etiology of type 2 diabetes in Asian Indians. The objectives of this study was to evaluate effect of vitamin D supplementation on glycemic profile and body composition in prediabetic and vitamin D deficient overweight/obese Asian Indian women. In this open-label randomized placebo-controlled trial (78 weeks duration), 121 females (aged 20-60 years) with prediabetes and vitamin D deficiency were randomly allocated in intervention (n, 61) and placebo (n, 60) groups. ⋯ Changes in category of 2-hour glucose post OGTT after intervention were as follows; intervention group: normal glucose tolerance (NGT) 51.2% and prediabetes, 48.8%; placebo group: NGT, 43.9%; prediabetes, 53.7% and T2DM, 2.4%. After intervention, subscapular skinfold (visit Ist compared to visit IIIrd) and suprailiac skinfold (visit IInd compared to visit IIIrd) were significantly lower in intervention group vs. control group. In conclusion, we observed significant reduction in FBG, 2-hour glucose post OGTT, HbA1c, and truncal subcutaneous fat and reversal to normoglycemia in overweight/obese prediabetic vitamin D deficient Asian Indian women after 78 weeks of vitamin D supplementation.

Actual use studies play a key part in evaluating the reduced risk potential of tobacco and nicotine products. This study was undertaken to determine the puffing topography, mouth level exposure (MLE) and average daily consumption (ADC) relating to two commercially available tobacco heating products (THPs) and a prototype electronic cigarette (or e-cigarette) among Italian non-mentholated 7 mg ISO tar cigarette smokers. The study was conducted in Milan, Italy, with three groups of approximately 50 participants. ⋯ The average daily consumption (ADC) of cigarettes by groups 1 and 3 were higher than the respective ADCs of both THP consumables. There were no significant differences in ADC when comparing the same product between different groups. Differences seen between sensory scores for each of the product categories may be attributed to fundamental differences in design and mode of operation resulting in very different characteristics of the aerosol generated.

(-)-Trans-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) is the main compound responsible for the intoxicant activity of Cannabis sativa L. The length of the side alkyl chain influences the biological activity of this cannabinoid. In particular, synthetic analogues of Δ9-THC with a longer side chain have shown cannabimimetic properties far higher than Δ9-THC itself. ⋯ The binding activity of Δ9-THCP against human CB1 receptor in vitro (Ki = 1.2 nM) resulted similar to that of CP55940 (Ki = 0.9 nM), a potent full CB1 agonist. In the cannabinoid tetrad pharmacological test, Δ9-THCP induced hypomotility, analgesia, catalepsy and decreased rectal temperature indicating a THC-like cannabimimetic activity. The presence of this new phytocannabinoid could account for the pharmacological properties of some cannabis varieties difficult to explain by the presence of the sole Δ9-THC.
