Comparative Study[Plasma C reactive protein in elective orthopedic surgery].
C reactive protein (CRP) is used as a marker of inflammatory, infectious and surgical processes. ⋯ Plasma CRP levels fluctuate after elective orthopedic surgical procedures, with maximum values observed between the 2nd and 3rd postoperative day followed by an ulterior decrease. This behavior changes if postoperative complication appear. Serial measurements of CRP levels may be useful in the early detection of surgical complications.

[Long-term results of repair versus replacement for degenerative mitral valve regurgitation].
Mitral valve repair is considered better than mitral valve replacement for degenerative mitral regurgitation. ⋯ Repair of the mitral valve offers a better overall survival and a better chance of freedom from cardiac events as well as need for anticoagulation 10 years after surgery.

[Influence of personality and learning styles in the choice of medical specialty].
Several studies indicate that doctors who work in the same area of the medical profession tend to behave somehow similarly. Thus, it has been suggested that personality relates to the medical specialty choice. However, it is not known whether people self-select into the medical specialties according to their personality or the professional practice in a particular field influences their behavior. ⋯ According to their personality and learning style, graduates tend to self-select into different medical specialties. This information may help medical graduates to guide their specialty choice process, and medical educators to develop learning experiences that take into account the individual differences of their residents.

Case Reports[Recurrent Impetigo Herpetiformis: successfully managed with ciclosporine. Report of one case].
Impetigo Herpetiformis is a high-risk gestational skin disease that represents a risk for both the mother and offspring. Its management is based on multisystemic support and maternal steroid therapy. When these measures are insufficient to control the disease, the association of ciclosporine to the treatment has been proposed. ⋯ The disease was refractory to the use of steroids, the patient had a metabolic decompensation and a dehydration with electrolyte imbalance. Therefore, treatment with ciclosporine was initiated and a rapid regression of the lesions was observed. Gestation was maintained, with a good perinatal outcome.

[Prophylactic thyroidectomy in children and young people with hereditary medullary thyroid carcinoma: a Chilean experience].
With the availability of the RET proto-oncogene genetic testing, it is possible to perform prophylactic total thyroidectomy among carriers of RET mutation. ⋯ Prophylactic total thyroidectomy should be done early in life because there is an age-dependent progression from HCC to MTC. MTC often precedes biochemical detection of the disease.
