Comparative Study[Prevalence of nasal colonization by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in medical students in Chile: comparison between pre-clinical and clinical environment].
The primary objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of nasal colonization of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in medical students in pre-clinical versus clinical courses at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and to describe the epidemiological, clinical and molecular pattern of the MRSA strains obtained. ⋯ The MRSA nasal carriage found in our medical students was low, finding positive samples only in students with clinical exposure. This prevalence is similar to the one reported in other studies in Chile with similar characteristics.

Admissions by tuberculosis in a regional reference Center. A complex and worrying scenario.
To characterize clinical aspects, evaluate the diagnostic opportunity, and identify factors associated with mortality in patients hospitalized for tuberculosis (TB). ⋯ In this case series, the diagnosis of TB cases was delayed, scarcely diagnosed by molecular methods, highly concentrated at the hospital level, required admission in a large percentage of cases, and had a high case-fatality rate.

Comparative Study[Stage at diagnosis of prostate cancer in an institutional hospital. Review and comparison of national and international data].
Prostate cancer (PCa) is a disease with a high prevalence and incidence worldwide. Screening has pursued the early diagnosis of this disease to provide early treatment. We sought to characterize patients from a local hospital with respect to diagnosis and staging and to compare these results with previously reported data. ⋯ The stage at diagnosis in our series is somewhat higher than that reported by developed countries but considerably lower than that published by other Latin American countries and even from other hospitals in our country. It is of great national relevance to have clear protocols for screening and access to PSA to reduce the cases diagnosed in advanced stages.

Case Reports[Managing Superwarfarin Poisoning: A Challenging Case].
Human intoxication by long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides, known as superwarfarins, causes coagulopathy that is difficult to manage. We present the case of a 42-year-old man who ingested a toxic dose of rodenticide in a suicide attempt, evolving with epistaxis, INR of 11.6, and needing hospitalization. For seven days, serial controls of coagulation tests were carried out, with optimization of different doses of Vitamin K supplementation. The case highlights this type of anticoagulant's potency and prolonged half-life (approximately six weeks), which requires regular clinical control and satisfactory treatment adherence.

The decision to study a medical specialty involves considering several personal, family, and professional factors, and currently, in Chile, there needs to be more information about this. ⋯ The factor that most influence students' intention to continue towards a medical specialty is personal attitude, followed by perceived control of behavior, and finally by expected future income.
