The National Practitioner Data Bank began operation on September 1, 1990, nearly a year after the final regulations for it were published in the October 17, 1989, Federal Register. One of two major provisions of the Health Care Quality Improvement Act (HCQIA) of 1986 (P. L. 99-660), the data bank is expected to have widespread implications for all surgeons and Fellows of the College. This article summarizes the effects it is anticipated the data bank will have on Fellowship and provides a general outline of the regulations that will affect surgeons.
