A proposed research misconduct policy for universities and postgraduate colleges in developing countries.
Research misconduct policy (RMP) is a legal document that shows the definitions of the various types of misconduct, describes the inquiry and investigation of allegations, and the appropriate penalties that should be imposed. The presence of the adopted RMP on the website of a university or postgraduate college is an indication of the level of commitment to promote the proper handling of misconduct cases. Perusal of the websites of top universities in developing countries revealed that many do not have RMP on their websites. ⋯ The proposed RMP was designed to act as a template. It should be modified as required based on the prevailing local circumstances and made fit for purpose. Universities, postgraduate colleges and journals should have RMP on the homepage of their websites.

High carriage rates of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing enterobacteriaceae in children at admission into paediatric wards of a university teaching hospital in Lagos, Nigeria.
Bowel carriage has been identified as the main reservoir of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-PE) and hospital-acquired infections. There are gaps in the knowledge of trends of these rates, which need to be filled for the development and implementation of hospital surveillance systems and antibiotic stewardship programmes in Nigeria. ⋯ The carriage rate of ESBL-PE is high (25.3%) among children, and none-carriers may become colonised within 14 days of hospitalisation.

Comparison of visual estimation of intra-operative blood loss with haemoglobin estimation in patients undergoing caesarean section.
Obstetrical haemorrhage is a potentially preventable cause of maternal morbidity and mortality; and measurements of surgical blood loss (BL) are often inaccurate. Accurate BL estimation is paramount as it may substantially alter the timing of interventions to control haemorrhage. The study compares the assessment of intra-operative BL by visual estimation with BL calculated from haemoglobin estimation using the HemoCue®201+. ⋯ This study showed that visually EBL was closely related to HemoCue CBL when the quantity of BL was <500 ml.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of low-dose intravenous dexamethasone combined with caudal analgesia on post-herniotomy pain.
Caudal analgesia for postoperative pain relief in paediatric day-case surgery has been found to be of short duration, hence the need for addition of adjuncts to prolong the analgesia. ⋯ The use of low-dose intravenous dexamethasone (0.25 mg/kg) in combination with caudal block prolonged duration of analgesia, reduced pain scores and analgesic consumption postoperatively, in children undergoing day-case herniotomy.
