French Spine Surgery Society guidelines for management of spinal surgeries during COVID-19 pandemic.
Since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in December 2019 in China, various measures have been adopted in order to attenuate the impact of the virus on the population. With regard to spine surgery, French physicians are devoted to take place in the national plan against COVID-19, the French Spine Surgery Society therefore decided to elaborate specific guidelines for management of spinal disorders during COVID-19 pandemic in order to prioritize management of patients. ⋯ We also report French experience in a COVID-19 cluster region illustrated by two clinical cases. We hope that the guidelines formulated by the French Spine Surgery Society and the experience of spine surgeons from a cluster region will be helpful in order optimizing the management of patients with urgent spinal conditions during the pandemic.

Appendectomy in patient with suspected COVID-19 with negative COVID-19 results: A case report.
Even at present, we are in the middle of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and are facing challenges in trial and error. Presently, emergency surgery for patients with suspected COVID-19 is burdensome not only for patients but also for healthcare workers. Therefore, we established a surveillance system in the emergency room and established principles for managing patients suspected of COVID-19 who require emergency surgery. ⋯ When COVID-19 is suspected, emergency surgery should be performed as for confirmed COVID-19 without delay.

Almost 90% of cerebral thromboembolism cases are caused by atherosclerosis. Craniocervical atherosclerosis is often observed at the carotid bifurcation and is responsible for 20%-30% of all stroke cases. The course of atherosclerotic carotid artery stenosis varies depending on the grade of stenosis and characteristics of the plaque. Carotid artery stenting (CAS) can be used as a less invasive method in patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic high-grade carotid artery stenosis. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is an effective method for detection of silent or symptomatic acute ischemic lesions that may arise due to CAS or carotid endarterectomy. The number and volume of new ischemic lesions are determined using DWI. ⋯ New ischemic lesions due to CAS appear mostly in the main arterial territory but they may also occur in watershed areas.

Visceral hypersensitivity and psychological performance are the main pathophysiological mechanisms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Previous studies have found that cholecystokinin (CCK) can enhance colon movement and that serotonin transporter (SERT) is a transmembrane transport protein with high affinity for 5-hydroxytryptamine, which can rapidly reuptake 5-hydroxytryptamine and then regulate its action time and intensity. We speculate that SERT and CCK might play a role in the pathogenesis of diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D) by affecting visceral sensitivity and the brain-gut axis. ⋯ IBS-D patients had psychosomatic disorders and visceral hypersensitivity. SERT and CCK might be involved in the pathogenesis of IBS-D by regulating the brain-gut axis and affecting visceral sensitivity. This provides a new potential method for identifying a more specific and effective therapeutic target.

COVID-19 managed with early non-invasive ventilation and a bundle pharmacotherapy: A case report.
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has become an immense public health burden, first in China and subsequently worldwide. Developing effective control measures for COVID-19, especially measures that can halt the worsening of severe cases to a critical status is of urgent importance. ⋯ Early non-invasive ventilation with a bundle pharmacotherapy may be an effective treatment regimen for the broader population of patients with COVID-19.
