The association of biomedical sciences with mathematics is inextricable and undeniable. It should be considered that gaining confidence or strong belief within the framework of a scientific experiment - in the 'compulsory' marriage with statistics - does not mean total and undisturbed certainty. The null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) has been the kernel of statistical data analysis for a long period. ⋯ Account must be taken of their origin, conditioning (medical knowledge), as well as specific implications in clinical practice. The effect size makes possible to compare results of various research works. It is argued that to the rescue for modern science can come research works that bear the stamp of reproducibility, for example studies conducted in several independent centres, based on coherent and meticulous methodology, or data from various centres typed in one spotless big database and submitted to rigorous and deliberate multilevel statistical analyses.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyInitial intraocular pressure reduction by mono- versus multi-therapy in patients with open-angle glaucoma: results from the Glaucoma Intensive Treatment Study.
To study newly diagnosed glaucoma patients given mono- or multi-therapy regarding differences in initial intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction, target IOP levels reached and influence of untreated baseline IOP on IOP reduction. ⋯ Intensive treatment led to considerably greater IOP reduction than mono-therapy. Among patients with IOP ≥30 mmHg at diagnosis an IOP of <16 was reached in 2/3 of those with multi-therapy but in none with mono-therapy. The IOP reduction was highly dependent on the untreated IOP level.

Risk factors for development and progression of diabetic retinopathy in Dutch patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
To investigate risk factors for the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and long-term visual outcomes in Dutch patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). ⋯ These data show relatively low cumulative incidences of DR, VTDR and visual impairment. Higher mean HbA1c, HbA1c variability, age of onset of T1DM and total cholesterol were independently associated with the risk of DR development, and a protective association was found for HDL cholesterol in subjects with T1DM. Mean HbA1c and presence of albuminuria were associated with progression of DR.

Consensus on procedures to include in a simulation-based curriculum in ophthalmology: a national Delphi study.
The number of available simulation-based models for technical skills training in ophthalmology is rapidly increasing, and development of training programmes around these procedures should follow a structured approach. The aim of this study was to identify all technical procedures that should be integrated in a simulation-based curriculum in ophthalmology. ⋯ The Delphi process identified and prioritized 25 procedures that should be practised in a simulation-based environment to achieve competency before working with patients. The list may be used to guide the development of future training programmes for ophthalmologists.
