Laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation in patients undergoing surgical procedures under balanced general endotracheal anesthesia may provoke a sympathetic response with tachycardia and hypertension. ⋯ The results of this investigation indicate that intravenous bolus dose of remifentanil of 0.5 microg/kg, combined with thiopental, reduces the cardiovascular response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation, whereas bolus doses of remifentanil, 1 and 1.5 microg/kg, provide cardiovascular stability, as well as safe and efficient induction of anesthesia.
