Standardized Surgical Video Curriculum for Teaching Residents Principles of Abdominal Hysterectomy.
To evaluate whether an institutionally created video-based educational module will improve obstetrics and gynecology residents' understanding of surgical anatomy and principles for performing abdominal hysterectomy. Secondary aims included evaluating the trainees' confidence levels and perceptions before and after the educational experience and ultimately implementing the module into the program curriculum, if successful. ⋯ A video module can be a high-quality and effective educational tool for teaching the surgical principles, anatomy, and steps to perform abdominal hysterectomy to obstetrics and gynecology residents.

Transgender (trans) individuals experience high discrimination levels when accessing medical and mental health care, resulting in poorer health outcomes compared with the general population and other minority populations. A community-based research design was used to elicit direct input from the trans community about critical trans-knowledgeable care components to address these disparities. The data collection included several focus groups with individuals recruited from the trans community. The information from this research guided the opening of the Gender Center, a centralized, multidisciplinary center of care for trans individuals within an urban safety-net hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. ⋯ This study demonstrates the importance of community-based research in addressing health disparities for trans people. It also offers insight into the unmet healthcare needs of the trans community, describes typical healthcare-related experiences of trans individuals, and identifies critical elements for providing high-quality trans-appropriate health care.

Parent distress and child sleep problems have been associated in earlier research. The present study expands on past research on parent depressive symptoms and their child's sleep. This study examines the relation between parents who screen positive for depressive symptoms and their perception of their child's sleep. ⋯ Parents with a positive DS were more likely to report sleep problems in their children after adjusting for the child's age. These findings from a diverse sample of US Midwestern families at primary care venues corroborate previous research.

Incidence of Refeeding Syndrome in Pediatric Inpatients at the US-Mexico Border.
Refeeding syndrome is a life-threatening, physiological process that occurs when patients with severe malnutrition are too rapidly rehabilitated, leading to the development of electrolyte abnormalities. Hypophosphatemia, a hallmark of the disease, has most commonly been studied, because it is recognized to result in cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, cardiac failure, respiratory failure, rhabdomyolysis, coma, and even death. Although many studies have found caloric intake to be a main causal factor in refeeding syndrome, few have explored other factors, such as geographic location. Border cities, such as El Paso, Texas, have a unique, diverse population. The purpose of this study was to establish the incidence of refeeding syndrome concentrated within a border city. ⋯ Among hospitalized adolescents admitted to El Paso Children's Hospital, 19% developed refeeding syndrome. This incidence was higher in our population than had been previously reported. Further research is needed to better establish a protocol for the treatment of patients with eating disorders.
